The book is a military thriller about a terrorist organization and their attempts to attack targets in Canada, U.K and U.S. It is not something that would normally appeal to me. However, Sam Hendricks has hidden depths and he certainly knows how to tell a story and the book has great authenticity as he writes from personal knowledge and experience. It's also very helpful that he lists out "fighter acronyms" at the beginning of the book for those of us who have no knowledge of military language.
I like the way Hendricks sets the scenes, mixes up the pace and tone and keeps up the suspense until the final climax. He also writes great dialogue - something of which I'm a great fan - as well-written dialogue really drives the story forward.
When the author sent me the book he told me that it was written more for a male audience. Possibly, but that does not detract from the quality of the writing and if you like quality then whether you're male or female you will appreciate this book.
This 337 page thriller is not a quick read. It takes attention and focus to keep up with the fast-moving events in the novel and to fully enjoy it, especially if you are not familiar with the technical language and acronyms of fighter pilots. Apparently the author recognized this, so for those not familiar with fighter pilot lingo, he frequently explains it, and also has provided a glossary at the beginning of the book for consultation. Take your time, sit back and enjoy!
