I`m so excited for this series by Jami Wagner I was anxious to read about Conner`s story. Have to say I am love going to the Black Alcove Bar for this is not just a bar but one that brings friends, family and even love. The attraction that Conner and Alexis have start as friendship but come on Conner is one hot guy no girl can resist him. I felt for Alexis and her nerves about meeting her long lost brother after all these years. One thing I love about Jami Wagner is that it is not just Conner and Alex but we see everybody from her previous books how far they have come along. The characters in these books are memorable and Alex is one person who needs these people in her life especially the love Conner is determined to give her. Cannot wait for more from Black Alcove Jami Wagner.
Conner is a young father trying to build the best life for his son, Jake, (so endearing!) which involves a big decision on whether or not to get back together with Jake’s mother, Heather. I really feel for Conner in the situation of not knowing he had a son and trying to make up for the time as quickly as possible, AND agonizing over how to best build a lasting family. Wagner did a wonderful job showing Conner’s protective sides in all aspects with his son, family, and Alexis.
Enter Alexis. Her family situation had me hooked from the start as well. I really wanted her to just walk up to her brother and hug him, but, of course, that isn’t what happened (and where would the fun be in that, anyway?). I felt like Alexis was stuck between holding on to independence and the uncertainty of her place in the world, and wanting to give into having someone in her life to lean on and a family to love—and having a family who loves her back. Her journey was heart warming!
My favorite excerpt (which took a while to figure out!):
“A lustful look fills her eyes as she leans her head back, looking up at me. I start counting. One, I shouldn’t kiss her. She could be a convicted and wanted felon for all I know and I’ve been reading about her in the paper but would never know because I don’t even know her whole name. Two, this is a bad idea. I should keep her as my neighbor and my friend. Jake likes her—I can’t ruin that. Three, but she smells like peaches. Four, if I can’t even tell her what’s going [on] with Jake’s mom, crossing the friendship line is the last thing we should do. Five, f*** it. I lean down and her eyes close.”
There are so many family based feels in this story and the love journey fits in with Wagner’s Black Alcove series perfectly. I cannot recommend this series enough. (Can we take a moment here to also celebrate Logan who happens to be one of my fav BA peeps evah!) Each book is a standalone love story, but if you read from Book 1 (JUST ONE KISS) you’ll appreciate them more.
These characters! My favorite from Wagner by far! Their situation isn’t a new one for me to read, but they make it their own. Alexis is so independent and Conner is so out there AND with a child. They couldn’t be more opposite, but then again they attract to each other so well, especially with their first meeting. Like how can two people be so rude but then feel so much, even if it started as a friendship.
The family aspect to this book though was spot on. There was so much happening but then it just made the love for these characters stronger because they all understood each other, but then some were idiots and some were hard headed, and others just made you swoon.
The Worst Parts:
No one should ever see a girl sobbing her eyes out trying to change a tire while it’s pouring rain. But then again when it ends with love who cares! The ending was super cheesy but adorable and wonderful an full of just exactly who Alex and Conner are.
One of the main reasons that I love this series is because you get to see the minor characters and THEN get their own books but when they get their own it is their own. You get to see the old characters and where they are but it isn’t their story continuing. These are true interwoven standalones.
Quick, cute read. add to your TBR
