When I entered college in the early '60s with little knowledge about jazz, a group of self-styled student-experts from Chicago quickly dismissed my Columbia Record Club jazz LPs--by Brubeck, Desmond, Duke Ellington, and of course "outdated" Louis--but in particular it was W. Coast white jazz musicians who were panned on the basis that they could neither swing nor play with "soul." Herbie Mann was immediately placed among the "fraudulent," "fay" music-makers from the West Coast "cool school" (thanks in great part to his inferior turn on Sarah's and Clifford's recording of "September Song)". I have a hunch that Herbie had such criticism in mind when he made this album for a distinctively East Coast soul jazz label featuring 90% black artists. Did he make a point?

The truth of the matter is that Herbie--who would go on to make a number of best-selling, albeit artistically lame, albums during the fusion-crazy era of the 1970s--was a formidable flutist--as good if not better than Hubert Laws, Buddy Collette, and Sam Most. But by the 1990s a flute player didn't "count" unless flute was a 2nd instrument, used occasionally to give the saxophone a rest. The same was largely true of clarinet, the instrument of choice by the two most successful instrumental soloists of the swing era--viz. Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw. Today, Anat Cohen and Eddie Daniels might surpass Goodman's or Shaw's musicianship on the clarinet--but it wouldn't matter. Clarinet has become an inessential instrument, good for occasional doubling--or the day that Dixieland bands come back..

This CD is an excellent example of Mann's evolution into a master musician. There is energy in this CD usually found in his live recordings.

This is a great CD because the music is high quality and easily accessable. Unlike bebop which is like jazz on steroids, you can listen to this CD at the end of a hard day at work, cleaning the house, driving, etc. You can put it on at a party and set a nice, relaxed, hip mood.
