***.5 "The Sheriff Meets His Match" by Jaquie Biggar (Reviewed by Alicia Kendall Klick)
While the premise of this story was interesting and the characters extremely likable, I felt the novel was short on substance in regard to the plot line and character development.
Jaquie Biggar takes us back to Tidal Falls, a small town in Washington state. Jack Garritt is the Sheriff of Tidal Falls and is known for taking his position seriously and for following the letter of the law. That is until Laurel Thomas takes over as his receptionist.
Laurel has spunk, used sticky notes as reminders to herself or for Jack, she loves to dress fashionably, even when there is several feet of snow, she is friendly, she is extremely attractive and she is falling in love with Tidal Falls and thinking of it as a place she could finally settle down. Only one hitch: her Uncle Max, who shows up out of the blue.
While the reader gets the whole story in regard to each character and what their background and other info is and how they relate to one another. I felt that the author could have added just a little more in all areas and this novella would have truly been a true four star read.
While it ends happily and with everyone settling back into normality, the ending seems to cut the novella short and make it almost chopped off at the end.
It is an enjoyable read and I did find the novella interesting and it generally held my attention. A great beach, rainy, or snow day read.
Be sure to pick up the rest of the books in this series. They are wonderful and definite reads.
I haven't read all of the anthology yet but I enjoyed "The Sheriff Met His Match" as well for the same reasons.
Several of the others I have read have EXTREMELY explicit sex/language for my taste. If that's for you the storylines are good.
I will be reading the other stories to see if there's another hidden gem like Ms Batman's.
However, there are some technical problems that knock it down a star right off the bat. For instance, this line from an actual story featured in this novel: “YourHer pouty lips are practically beggeding for hismy mouth and your. The glistening tissues were are more tempting that a gourmet feast.” I can tell what happened here, the author sent this out for editing but then didn't take the edit suggestions. The multiple errors in this sentence alone made me question the author and the boxed set as a whole. I would assume that prior to publication the whole boxed set gets looked over for consistency and a final spellcheck if nothing else. Spellcheck would have caught this. And to me, that is unforgivable.
In addition to the editing problems, some of the stories have dubious consent... a boss hitting on and touching a subordinate without getting verbal permission for instance. While there is no out and out non-con, people who have triggers in that direction should be careful and aware. In this instance, the writing was good and error free, however the dubious consent is a huge squick and that story earned a DNF which automatically drops it another star.
That being said, there's some good in here. The best story of the bunch was THE BEST MAN FOR LEAH by Caitlyn Lynch. I loved the main character and the sex was fantastic. Also the HEA hit me right in the feels. I'll definitely be on the lookout for more from her.
In all, there's likely a story here that will fit everyone's taste and the price is worth the gems, even if you have to sift through the chaff to find them.
I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.
