Surviving the Scorpius infection was a physical hell on the body and the aftereffects are continuing to transform the charming Texan Tace Justice into a man he doesn’t recognize. Not having gotten enough Vitamin B to protect him from the worse effects he wonders if he’s becoming a sociopath, emotions he once felt he no longer does. His sense of humanity is darker now and the Vanguard medic excelled at fighter training, he can easily kill now and there would be no remorse. The one thing that makes him feel anything is a woman who deserves better than him yet he cannot stay away from. Is his heated interest, the stormy attraction he feels toward her, the obsession of a sociopath or is it more? He’ll protect her because he can’t not do so.
A trusted kick-ass member of the Vanguard team, Samantha (Sami) Steel is keeping a secret that could cost her the respect of her comrades and possibly her life. She’s former LAPD and a fighter trained by her family, the latter of which is true. In reality she’s a hacker in disguise who knows the location of The Bunker, a government laboratory that might hold the answers that could save what’s left of the human race yet she’s told no one for she never wants to return to that place after the things she’d seen done there. When Tace becomes ill with symptoms she recognizes she confesses hoping to save his life for he’s come to mean to much to her to lose. Will Vanguard find what they need in time to save Tace?
I loved returning to this fascinating post-apocalyptic world and the battle for survival that the remaining humans face, it makes one wonder what people like ourselves would do under such circumstances. The world is now dark and gritty, emotions realer and rawer than in the civilized past for each day could be one’s last, the term “survival of the fittest” takes on a deadly new meaning as the worse side of human nature comes out to play all too often. Tace and Sami are part of a dedicated group who still care about others and fight for what’s right against those that would subjugate them. The elite of Vanguard will do what they have to but their objective shows the better aspects of humankind are still in existence, but whether good can totally conquer evil has always been a hotly debated question.
Amid a fast moving action packed storyline in a complex constantly changing environment the intriguing suspense of this series continues and heightens: an alliance is formed that is tentative yet advantageous, the crazed President is still out there causing no end of trouble, and betrayal comes from within that is not unexpected but unfortunate in its timing, someone desperately sought by one was found but not in the condition the seeker remembered. The relationship between Tace and Sami was highly emotional, seductive, and explosive, a collision of two souls who would do anything and everything to protect the other. This series has many compelling multi-faceted characters that draw you in completely, you can’t help but become invested in their outcome. Bring on the next book please!
This was a very good story and addition to the series. I've liked Tace in previous books and I'm glad things are looking up for him. Sami was a bit of a mystery in the past but I found that I liked her and she fit well with Tace.
Sami is a lieutenant of Jax, the leader of the Vanguard. Sami has awesome fighting skills and claims to have been a LAPD rookie before Scorpius hit. Sami loves being a member of the Vanguard and has reasons for her secrets but when Tace is at risk, Sami is forced to make a choice.
Tace is a Texan that was a medic in the military before Scorpius. Now that Scorpius has hit, Tace took a position as a lieutenant to Jax in the Vanguard. They don't have many doctors so Tace does a lot more of the medical work now. Tace was infected with Scorpius a few weeks ago and although he survived, his metal state have changed since then and Tace doesn't know how he might change in the future.
Tace was always attracted to Sami but since the Scorpius infection, he's been obsessing over her and feeling very protective. In the previous book, the Vanguard forged a tentative alliance with "the Mercenaries" another group of survivors that are also being targeted by the "President" turned psychopath. The Mercenaries ask the Vanguard for some medical help for people injured in the President's attack (which took place in book #2 but only a day before in book time). Jax sends Tace to help with the medical issues and Sami to watch his back.
Tace and Sami have to stay close to each other in Vanguard territory and it pushes their mutual attraction to undeniable levels. They try to fight it but eventually, neither of them is able of willing to fight it anymore. Of course this is when Tace has a rare reaction to the Scorpius infection....one that could kill him. It forces Sami to come forward with her secrets and allows the Vanguard and the Mercenaries to team up and infiltrate the government lab they've been looking for. There are still some issues pending when this story ends but 2 things are resolved: 1. Tace's life threatening issue is taken care of and 2. Tace and Sami are solidly together and they're working towards a HEA together (as much as possible in a post apocalyptic world).
This was a very enjoyable story. I liked Sami in previous book but with certain reservations. Once everything came out, I liked her more and thought she was a good match for Tace. Tace is a good guy...he got a bit more clinical about some things after his infection but I still liked him and thought he was good in his core. I actually tend to think that his love for Sami will help with some of the emotion dampening effects Scorpius can have. Overall, I liked the characters and found the story to be very interesting and engaging. I'm really enjoying this series and would recommend it. :)
Apocalyptic romance adventure. Third in the series. Read the prior books first.
Vanguard is a survivalist camp run by a few elite soldiers. Tace Justice (pun intended?) is a soldier and medic. He's survived the Scorpious virus so far but his recovery has left him a different man. Samantha is one of the trained elite soldiers defending the camp while scavenging the surrounding homes and buildings for supplies.
This is Tace and Sami's story.
The Scorpious virus changes people. They can become unfeeling and sociopathic. The men also become extremely over-protective of women. Weirdly, it's also the third couple where the man has a need to dominate and spank while their chosen seems to get off on this behavior as well. Fortunately (?) there is only one sex scene that involves this behavior. Otherwise, it's the usual really big, tight fit encounters.
Sami is keeping secrets from the Vanguard leadership. Everyone appears to know she's keeping secrets but is pissed and shocked when those secrets are revealed. And oh, how funny when she starts crying and all the he-men flip out and get either mad or awkwardly protective.
I found this couple a bit lacking though. This may be because I didn't really care all that much for either the hero, who can now kill easily and has lost his charm vs. the heroine who is more worried about being a soldier and her secrets than much else.
Overall a good adventure that moves the series further along their apocalyptic journey of survival.
