Issue 13 ended with a small cliffhanger as the Zamaron research center is attacked by Darkseid’s para-angels but Jessica Cruz is able to dispatch them with relative ease in this issue. Cruz takes charge of the group that are intending to take on Darkseid despite protest by Okkult. In my review of the previous issue I simply referred to Okkult as a mysterious man in a mask because I never heard anyone give him a name and I was under the impression that his identity was a total mystery. We get the reveal of Okkult and it’s interesting although he’s a far more powerful character than I would have guessed given what we’ve seen of him in the past.
The sales numbers for Justice League Odyssey are not very good, particularly for a title with Justice League in the name. Since Dan Abnett took over the review numbers have steadily improved until this issue when it nosedived down to an aggregate score of 7.0 on Comicbook Roundup and a 6.1 user rating.
So, what happened to cause the score to drop so badly? I really don’t understand the drop. I wrote in my review of issue #13 that it was a filler issue and other than the reveal of the identity of Okkult, this issue is kind of a filler also. This issue isn’t particularly riveting, but neither was 13 which got an 8.3. Maybe two slow issues in a row was the breaking point for some reviewers. It was also noticeable that this issue ends almost exactly the same as the previous issue. Finally, I’m still not happy with how Abnett killed Jessica Cruz and then IMMEDIATELY brought her back from the dead. It didn’t seem to have hurt the review scores for last issue, but it felt incredibly manipulative.
I would say this is on par with the previous issue and there is a little bit of plot advancement. I do think that Abnett is one of the better DC writers although he doesn’t seem to get the plum assignments or the sales of some other writers that I find inferior. We’ll see if JLO can survive much longer with the current sales numbers.
