Not sure if this is only a digital-version problem or if it affects all formats, but the audio quality is terrible.
Make whatever dated remarks you like about their instrumental skills or about being made-for-TV or "pre-fab," musically the Monkees were always first & foremost a vocal group. That's why the mix on this album is disappointing, since the vocals are often buried under the instrumentation. Most noticeable on the intro track "Circle Sky" where Mike Nesmith's voice is all but inaudible, but sloppy mixing mars the audio throughout.
Musically this album features a "harder" style than you'd expect from the Monkees and as a longtime fan I really want to like it, but the audio quality makes that difficult.

This is actually one of my favorites Monkees albums, with some of my favorite Monkees songs and the awesome hard rock sound they used to spice it up. I purchased the original album just before I managed to snag the Deluxe edition and I'm really happy to have both. I have to say that I think the sound quality is a bit better on the original version, but I was really happy to get the half hour DVD on the 2-Disc Deluxe, even though it is poor video and somewhat poor audio quality. If you're just a casual Monkees fan then I would stick with the original, but if you're a die hard Monkees fan then I think paying the extra money to get that half hour DVD of music videos spliced with shenanigans from the four is definitely worth it. Then again, I'm just that much of a Monkees fanatic.
For those still unsure, like I sorta was, the DVD includes 6 music videos that are different than the ones posted on Youtube and the like, mainly live performances that include some clips from the TV series and notably from Head. There's also Micky and Mike playing with some magic glasses, which is sorta awesome. If you're into the booklet and liner notes, the booklet that comes with the original album is much better, which is why I decided to keep both. Overall, I think everyone should give this album a try and if you like it, shoot for the Deluxe edition.

I have the cd of this release and was looking forward to this vinyl release. The record looks cool on the clear vinyl, but that’s about it. The mastering for this vinyl is horrible. All vocals and most instruments, except the bass, are buried and muffled, as is the bass but it stands out annoyingly the most. I’m really disappointed with this Friday Music Lp. Hope someone in the future will do this album Justus.

I only found out recently that The Monkees did a new CD in 1997, but thankfully, I have it now. What an incredible album! While it starts out with a beefy remake of Circe Sky from the movie Head, the rest is original music. If you're looking for more "Last Train to Clarksville," you won't find it here, and that's a good thing. They all sing and they all play, creating some of the best music you've never heard of. Using the original configuration, with Davy Jones playing guitar on several tracks, they show their mettle and the music really shines.
The included DVD is also fun, and includes a few of the videos from this album. It's a lot of fun with behind-the-scenes action not in the 1997 TV Show.
My favorites? Circle Sky, Admiral Mike, Regional Girl, Run Away from Life, and Peter Tork's awesome tune, I Believe You.
If you're a Monkees fan, you need this one.

People are always and will always try to tear the Monkees down regardless of what they do. Or did. And that’s too bad. I don’t feel they ever really got their fair share. Boo to the Haters. They were the Monkees. Accept them.

Justus is the final project recorded by all four Monkees who wrote all the songs and played all the instruments. This deluxe edition includes a DVD featuring music videos of several songs included on the CD. The sound on the DVD is rather good, but the video reproduction is awful. It looks like it was transferred from a poorly recorded VCR tape. The CD portion of the package is a re-master of the original 1996 compact disc. As compared to the original compact disc mix, there's more presence in the bass and percussion parts and less presence in the vocals. The linear notes differ from original - the lyrics are not included. There is a brief essay instead.

This is the first and unfortunately only cd with the four original Monkees, for my MTV generation. The cd has rockers, ballads, moody beautiful pieces and stuff in between. Shame it wasn't really given a chance. I just got a co-worker who is late teens/early 20's and lent him the disc. He loved it. My only confusion about the dvd part is why can I find on You Tube alternate videos of Regional Girl and You and I? I would have loved for those to be on here as well. More versions the better and maybe the LA concert they did in 96 to start promoting Justus. I read that someone said it was great but 10 years too late. To me on one hand they are right. If this had been released instead of Pool It, who knows what would have happened? On the other, in the days of the grunge filled angst ridden 90's, it was so good to rock again that I didn't care. Mike, Micky, Peter and Davy, thank you for this. Now I want alternate versions of songs. I know they have to be out there and I am not the only one who would want it.

the cd sounds great, and the songs are great with the four monkees being the sole input for this album. The dvd is nice, though I had wished they would have included the mtv episode where they were poking fun at the old formula for their show.
What you get is nice though. It seems like they could have set it up better for a dvd release though as the quality is somewhere between vhs and dvd. Rhino Handmade is doing a great job with creating box sets for the monkees albums hopefully they won't just stop with the original 9. Pool it and Justus are great too.

Good comeback album from 1996 featuring all four members of this iconic band.

Over recent years I have acquired all the Monkees CDs/vinyl from their 60s heyday, and on this comeback album from 1996 the mix does seem more generally drum dominant then I remember from those earlier albums, but enjoyable nonetheless. My favourite tracks are the gentler "You and I", the Jazz fusion "I Believe You", "Its My Life" and "Its Not Too Late".

Glad to be back, not quite on top form

Not as good as the early stuff but for a completest still worth getting. Nesmith and Dolenz are still excellent songwriters and vocalists respectively but this album sounded as if the mix wasn't quite right, with vocals too far in the background. Still overall a few good numbers and certainly sounds of its age.

Headquarters Part II

This record has taken a lot of slagging over the years, but I loved it when it came out, and it still holds up strong. Nowhere else do you hear Nez playing so much great guitar, and Tork doing some sterling bass playing (check out 'You And I' for both Pete and Mike doing some beautiful stuff). Yes, Micky's drums are stiff, mostly due, I suspect to Mike having him play to a click, but still more than listenable. But mostly I love it because of the collective experience of it - just the guys playing songs, they wrote, harmonizing with each other, and really trying to create something special, by themselves. I only wish they had done a follow up. This re-release sounds much like the original cd which is fetching inflated prices. Get this before it goes out of print.

They're back in the Nineties

Item arrived promptly and in perfect condition: thanks. Probably their best post-1969 album yet lacking that indescribable quality which made their Sixties' work usually amazing or just very good.

A Pale but honest effort
Reviewed in Canada on April 2, 2012Verified Purchase
An honest effort by the Monkees for their 30 th anniversary. I found it to be a little pale in comparison to their 1960's music, but to coin one of their own statements, " That was then, this is now".
