From the Manufacturer
The K-Mix is a Swiss Army Knife for the studio and stage. It works as a high quality audio interface to get your music into and out of your computer. It is a fully programmable digital mixer with onboard effects, custom configurable presets, and no moving parts to break off in your bag. It’s a MIDI control surface with three banks so you can control parameters of your DAW or external hardware synths and effects right from the board. Electronic Musician Magazine says, “If you are looking for a control surface, a surround-capable audio interface, and a digital mixer with DSP, K-Mix is an extraordinary bang-for-the-buck synergy of all three.”
The analog front end of K-Mix boasts ultra-low distortion and noise combined with a flat frequency response out to 40kHz. This preserves the crystal clear harmonic content of the source material when mixing and recording. We use high-end AKM convertors for the highest quality sound. Amazingly, the whole thing can be run on USB bus power, which is simply a marvel of modern engineering and component design. Joe Chiccarelli (Producer, Frank Zappa, White Stripes) says, "It’s an entire console in the smallest, portable package ever!”
K-Mix is an 8-in/10-out Audio Interface with Ultra-Low Noise µPre Preamps, High-End AKM Converters, and a 32-bit Floating Point Signal Path- all USB Bus Powered!

Describe your product in 3 words.
Powerful. Portable. Audio.
How did you come up with the idea for this product?
I needed a very special mixer that did not exist - a fully programmable MIDI controlled ultra high quality portable mixer. To play live in a group without a sound-man, not having a mixer that could do all of this was heartbreaking. K-Mix had to be capable of tying all of my needs together, from live inputs to USB interfaces, and operate as a fully programmable stage mixer.
What makes your product special?
Making a portable, powerful mixer and high quality audio interface that could also function as a MIDI controller for total control of one's recording and performance environment was a lofty goal and worty challenge. We had to do it. There’s really no other product on the market that brings together all of these tools into one rugged, studio quality package, and that’s what makes K-Mix so special.
What has been the best part of your startup experience?
I'm very proud of the K-Mix and the team at KMI that put it together. K-Mix is the most collaborative product we've ever done.

Windows drivers and editing software was added shortly after I purchased which is a huge bonus.
There is a trade-off for the compactness and unique design when compared to standard mixers. It takes more than one hand to get to parts of many features since they require holding the shift button. This makes the workflow slower than most mixers.
I haven't used the control modes much yet, but they look like they will come in handy. Currently, it's one midi channel per control page. I'm hoping they allow channel assignment per control to make the pages more usable across multiple instruments/effects.
Every time I sit down to create , edit or process video or audio, I am amazed at the affordable tools available for me to work – and saddened, in a way, by how old I’ve grown.
K-Mix is to me very much like the first Mac: a fusion of ideas from many sources wrapped in a single beautiful package. If you had been involved with what was called “micro computing” at the time, you know what I mean. The K-Mix carries that tradition forward though it is vastly more useful than those first Macs.
K-Mix has to be seen as several devices in one package. It is a mixer, though by no means a traditional mixer. I have a stack of Behringer, Mackie, Alesis, even a TEAC mixer here – and I can’t throw any of them in a sling or pack and power them from a USB port. An important thing for my aging fingers is no knobs to turn. I’m not kidding when I say that’s a blessing for people with arthritis and similar disabilities. What a kick to control my gain with an LED illuminated slide. Useful – and beautiful. Beyond that, it is programmable as a USB audio interface! I don’t have that on any of my other mixers.
The manufacturer description describes it more succinctly than I can at this point:
“The K-Mix is a Swiss Army Knife for the studio and stage. It works as a high quality audio interface to get your music into and out of your computer. It is a fully programmable digital mixer with onboard effects, custom configurable presets, and no moving parts to break off in your bag. To me it’s mind-blowing.
First things first: there is no Windows software yet for setting controls and such. Mac only. And iPad. Considering that the primary market for this is music, the emphasis on Mac is understandable. I’ll be trying it with an iPad Air 2 and even an iPad Mini 2 until I can borrow a Mac. (Okay, I’ll admit it: I’ve already started scanning listings of used Macs for sale.) The packaging is well done, attractive, but not excessive. A wall wart power supply iwth 4 plug adapters for international use are provided along with two USB cables. When used iwth a Mac, you'll need one cable for power, the other for connecting to the computer.
So far, I’ve just used it in a rudimentary way for straight audio mixing – and I can already tell you I’m going to be up way late for several nights as I learn and grow accustomed to the controls.
This review is going to be one of those where I am adding to it over weeks and months while I learn how to use the gear.
There’s a Quickstart guide that will get you through the basics of using K-Mix as a mixer. I strongly advise you to patiently go through the single large page. On the back is a functional schematic on the back that required the use of a magnifier by me, but is both informative and amazing. Those with technical knowledge may find themselves sucking in their breath as they parse the schematic and get a hint of of what K-Mix can do.
I am a tech guy, so the very first thing I do is read the manual. I urge you to do the same. It is available online as a PDF and runs 156 pages. Blessedly, it is very well written and illustrated. Read it, please, read it. It will provide you total insight into what you can do with this little box.
I’m not kidding when I describe it as phenomenal: it really is. My primary use will be for video production and I can’t wait to learn it to the point where operation becomes second-nature. I grew up editing film on a Moviola and audio on tape. Mixing audio was Stone Age primitive and the idea of controlling one device through another was simply undreamt of.
K-Mix makes I all so simple. I love it and I will posting as I incr6ease my knowledge.
BUT:..............Back and forth with tech support to get a new unit sent. First problem, the faders jumped from 75% to 110% with no in between. Then, headphone jack didnt work....another unit.
In any daylight, you will have a hard time seeing the fader leds. In bright sunlight; forget it.
Just had it glitch out on an outdoor show badly. In warm sunlight, the faders jumped to zero repeatedly......I would touch them to get them up and instantly they go to zero. SHOWSTOPPER.
When powering from a PC/USB, you will probably get a ground loop whine if you use the PC audio output into the mixer. Same, if you power it from a keyboard's USB when using it as a stand alone mixer (i.e. Yamaha Motif).
I used to use a MOTU Ultralite USB as an interface/mixer..........I wish there were a comparable . compact mixer.
With the computer attached, this becomes a 8in-10out audio interface. Need I say more than this is ample room to record all you need as many interfaces are only 2in-4out. I like the option of having multiple “ins” for recording drums with several mics onto several different tracks.
Also, this can be used as a midi interface to control your DAW. I haven’t tested the waters with this aspect of the device very much, but what I have seen is very cool – hands on instead of mouse clicks.
All in all, this is an incredible piece of gear and I am happy to have it. For the price point, the features you get, it’s a true value.
