Editorial Reviews

The tender musical heart of this enchanted take on The Man Who Fell to Earth belongs to composer Edward Shearmur, who turns in a largely synthesized score where spare, delicate piano melodies often recall Thomas Newman's deft sense of space and dynamics. While the general musical ethos seems a throwback to the mid-'80s heyday of pioneering electronic scores by Vangelis and Tangerine Dream, contemporary technical advances have allowed Shearmur to impart an ethereal and distinctly organic aural patina to these cues. Though informed by his atmospheric session work with Pink Floyd (The Division Bell), Shearmur's K-PAX score stands apart: quiet, mystically introspective music that seems as uncomplicated--and yet innately profound--as an autumn breeze. --Jerry McCulley

I saw this movie by accident and ended up loving every second of it, especially the musical score created by Edward Shearmur.
If you like entrancing melodies mixed with stylish beats that radiate the same vibe as many modern day car commercials, this cd is for you! I loved it and listened to the darn thing non stop for three days after purchasing it. I had to force myself to stop listening, a ritual I perform in order to not get sick of a good thing, and in this case, a great thing.
Grand Central, the opening track, is great. Taxi Ride is an eniticing track while Good Morning Bess creates a blissful feeling. Powell's Return and Coda are delightful and will give you a feeling of pure satisfaction, as if you've just accomplished something meaningful.
Please buy this cd(or download it). I can't stand it that people aren't exposed to this kind of mesmerizing beauty each day!!

I can't believe I haven't reviewed this CD until now. I saw the movie several months after it came out while living in Finland. I had to wait several more months until I came back to the United States before being able to order it. It was a long and painful wait.

Before this soundtrack, I had never heard of Edward Shearmur. I will not soon forget. This music is incredible. He did an amazing job of capturing the intriguing character of Prot and the mystery of the story. The music is quite moving and very innovative. He uses a lot of different sounds and produces many different feelings, and sometimes if you close youre eyes you even feel like you're moving.
Oh, words just do not do it justice.
Go! Now! Buy it. You'll love it.

Well, if I were to say any more about how wonderful the music on this cd is, I'd just be preaching to the choir. :) So I'll just make a couple comments.
1-See the movie before buying the soundtrack. It's really fun to have the scenes associated with the music (especially if you're listening to Grand Central in a car!)
2-The cd's only fault was that it doesn't have the song played during the credits. :( I liked that song, and I have no clue the title or singer. Can anybody here help?
The music is a bit light and airy than most instrumentals I listen to, a lot like sugar, but not a fault at all. :) I have a sweet tooth.

The K-pax soundtrack is worth the money to buy, if you have a good music attention span. Among the tracks are:
"Grand Central" opens with a smooth, soft piano sequence, which midway turns into an upbeat rythm, setting some electronic beats with a techo-ish sounding theme. "Taxi Ride" is an urban sounding, smooth score with the main piano theme coming into play to represent the New York nights. "Constellation Lyra" entices you into the feel of the universe before putting you back in your seat with a small reinstate of the main piano theme, setting your mind back in place. "4th of July" lays out a rythm with a piano theme runnign through it.
"New Mexico", the highlight of the entire CD, sums up the movie. It begins with rising mystery feel as Dr. Powell edges closer to learning the truth, before a brief intterupt and dangerous sounds coming into place, before the music switches to a soft and slow piano theme accopmanied by a single female voice, to illustrate a man's tragedy. The final short of the track illustrates a cascading river with the use of high strings, before adding a more gentle feel to depict the final tragic moments of a life gone horribly wrong.
The final track, "Coda" is a slow track which starts with a smooth sound introducing a piano theme which finally depicts a man learning a final lesson and borders on both sad and happy at once.
Overall this is an amazing CD which I reccodmend anyone to buy.

It's "Safe And Sound" by Sheryl Crow. It's not on the K-Pax soundtrack, but is on Sheryl's "C'mon C'mon" cd.
Hope this helps!

I saw a preview of the movie in late 2001, and just based on the music that accompanied the opening credits, I knew that buying the soundtrack CD was going to become a top priority for me. (For the record, the movie itself is also one of my recent favorites.) I have gone through periods of literally weeks where this CD is the only one I will listen to. It's truely wonderful to hear music from a legitimate film composer who is able to utilize the technical advances in electronic music and incorperate them into such a wonderfully tuneful score. The opening track "Grand Central" is completely addicting and somehow never gets old, but the track to pay most attention to is the compellingly simple and evocative final track ("Coda"), which ranks in my mind as one of the most hauntingly beautiful moments in recent movie music.

Edward Shearmur brought a magic touch in this K-Pax soundtrack. I knew I must get this soundtrack when I was sitting at the theater watching K-Pax. The music style leans toward modern age and new age music. Pay attention to the music score underlay when Kevin Spacey was summoned to the space institute and asked to demonstrate the orbital system surrounding K-Pax. That music further mystifies the already-suspicious atmosphere. I tried to recreate the element of suspicion at home by playing the CD late at night in the dark. Also on a side note, the music style in this soundtrack somewhat resembles to David Gray's, a tint of alternative, a little of contemporary and new age.
