A superbly written contemporary fantasy with an ancient romance. I was immediately hooked by the original idea of a K-Pro. I wondered if it wouldn't be a curse in itself, but the story twisted in a direction I didn't expect, and I was captivated by the building mystery. Andra and David are wonderfully contrasted as the main characters. Andra is easy-going and happy with her calling in life. David is uptight, strict, and not so happy even though he's following his dream of being an actor. They're surrounded by an entertaining cast of characters that made me laugh on several occasions.
The mythology behind the modern plot builds slowly. The reader is given little peeks to whet your appetite. M Pepper Langlinais makes it seem effortless as the layers unravel. It happens smoothly as if the plot is seamless. It adds to the subtle surreal atmosphere and unique character voices.
Andra has the power to grant wishes. She also can hear it when someone calls for her, be it half a world away. And Andra has heard the call of British actor David Styles, a man with an exceeding amount of self-control and a complete focus on building his career. Reluctantly, Andra responds to the call because something doesn't feel right, only to find that she may actually be hurting and not helping David. As she (and we) begin to learn why, the plot takes off in an unexpected direction. The ending is just as unexpected. Thumbs up on this book!
