I did not realize that my recovery disk did not have the OS on it so...
And on top of that the person I spoke to for tech support sounded like "R as in "famous", D as in "manner"" so I had to keep asking him to repeat everything.
The DVD/CD drive was always temperamental. It has been rather frustrating for such a "good laptop".
Although you may feel inadequate around the retina display laptops around you in class, you paid about half what they paid for a laptop with more power (depending on what they have).
I've played many games on the laptop and I don't experience much lag on decent settings. The laptop doesn't head up too much, either. It is all around pretty good.
For school, it performs pretty well, but I will say the keyboard is just average. It doesn't feel as nice as all the other laptops you will mess with, but like I said earlier... the power to price ratio is amazing.
If the keyboard felt a little stronger and had better feedback, I would give this laptop 5 stars.
I have had no problems with this laptop and do not regret purchasing it for a second.
I'm writing this review because I saw this laptop has so few. I bought this for myself as my 5-year-old HP laptop that had fan & battery problems from the get-go was finally starting to give out.
This laptop has a large, clear screen with great speakers so it's fine for watching a movie or show while cooking in the kitchen and the HDMI links up very easily with my TV when I plug it in in my room. There are a lot of complaints about Windows 8 out there but you can switch to the Windows 7 view easily if you find it too hard to figure out. My advice is that the world changes whether you like it or not so you might as well get accustomed to doing things in new ways all the time. I found Windows 8 to be much better when it comes to the startup/shutdown speed, hooking up to digital outlets and uninstalling programs like bloatware. The only thing I think is entirely counter-intuitive is how they show you your files. Having a "my computer" button on the Start page would fix this.
This computer is cool to the touch, I can barely hear the fan and the charge is lasting pretty long. It lasts over 3 hours on a full battery. Setting it up for the first time just took 5 minutes and you DO NOT need to have a Microsoft account (hotmail, msn.com) to finish it so don't bother if you don't have one.
If you are looking for a larger laptop with great sound and speed, buy this laptop.
Speed: very good, very fast. Boots in less than 2 minutes, I never have to wait to much to see the OS running.
HDD: is enough for my needs, but it depends on you.
Materials: external is plastic, the exterior is mate finish. Is not fancy, do not expect fancy materials at the exterior for this price.
Screen: very bright and nice color, good definition and very good to see movies or whatever you want. I usually connect my lap to my external monitor 23'.
Sound: is good, not excellent but good enough to watch my movie inside my bedroom staying 3 meters away from my laptop, of course using my external monitor.
This lap does not get overheat, even if you use it all day long never got overheat. I have had other laptops in the past and most of them heat so much (they kept my coffee mug hot haha) but this one not.
Processor is good, and I never have problems with the RAM (8gb), it is enough for my home use.
I am software developer and sometimes I use VS2012 in home and no problems with the performance.
Networking: I dont use it with ethernet cables, just WiFi and it works great. My comcast router is around 10 meters away in the living room and it pass two walls with no problem, I use it for streaming Netflix over WiFi and responds very well. I also connect to VPN using Cisco software and works great.
Software: Windows 8, I would rather W7 but it was not available.
