Brad Smith speaks from a unique position of having been there done that. He has years of practical application in not only the tactical enviroment as a K9 SWAT handler but as a "patrol dog" as well. Brad is not just an instructor/author, he is a practioner. He has successfully used the skills he describes thousands of times, saving countless man hours but more importantly made things safer for those going into harms way.

He started out years ago with just an idea that has grown into something that EVERY tactical team should consider adding to their skill sets and the bonus is that every thing discussed in his book can be used in day to day patrol functions for those not strictly "SWAT".

Author Smith has written this in a clear and concise format describing the end result and how to go about getting you and your K9 there. Reading this book should give every K9 handler pause for thought & challenge them to work towards the goals he has outlined. Doing so just might save a partners life or your own.

I've decoyed PSD's for the better part of 30 years, but left active law enforcement in the early 90's . The books benefit to my work was two fold. 1) it let me know that the recommendations that I've made to some of the teams I've decoyed are inline with the authors experience and 2) it provided to some serious food for thought in other areas that I have not yet addressed in my training. It might be a small book but it is large on information born out of real life experience.

This book is written by an expert practitioner who explains in plain English the ins and outs of integrating canines into tactical operations. One of the best handbooks on seamlessly integrating canines into tactical operations I’ve seen. It is written by a well-known practitioner who is thoroughly familiar with the practical aspects of using dogs in dangerous law enforcement assignments. The text is well-organized, easy to understand and replete with both lessons and examples gleaned from years on the street. Smith explains the “enhanced battlespace” resulting from a dog’s greater abilities to detect suspects outside the thresholds of human senses. Moreover, a trained canine provides a nonlethal option with built in “target acquisition radar” and the only one that can be recalled after “launch.” This book will become a critical part of law enforcement technical libraries and will be especially appreciated by tactical supervisors and managers for law enforcement special operations.

The information provided in the book is slightly above basic level. It provides ideas for growth of newly formed teams but doesn't give info as to teams already on a swat team for advancement. The paper back and limited number of pages does not make this book a value. Too highly priced

K9 Tactical Operations for Patrol & SWAT written by Brad Smith is a dynamic book that addresses a progressive move in the right direction for today's Tactical Operations Community. Brad tackles two of the most challenging facets of law enforcement operations, as both SWAT & K9 are instrumental in defeating today's violent offender. Brad's book is extremely detailed and provides the information necessary to properly embrace this multi-faceted approach to K9 Tactical Operations.

This book is a very informative and worthwhile read for anyone currently considering integrating K9's into SWAT operations or for those that already have already done so. Brad has addressed many of the concerns from the perspective of SWAT operators and handlers, and he also provides credible recommendations and answers. This book should be a standard resource for every agency involved in tactical team and K9 operations.

This is an exceptional and important book that is a must read for all K-9 officers and SWAT operators who will be working with each other. Brad not only simplifies SWAT K-9 training but also covers the equally important issues of policy development, operational planning and the complexity of SWAT K9 interoperability issues.

Brad hits all the main topics of SWAT and K9 integration in this book. It's about time someone finally addresses the long overdue marriage of SWAT/K9 training & deployments. Brad's extensive background makes this a reputable and solid read for line officers and command staff.
