KBL: Kill Bin Laden: A Novel Based on True Events Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 97 ratings

“Weisman is perhaps wired more tightly into the reclusive special operations community than any other writer, and his knowledge of weaponry and field techniques is staggering.”
Washington Times

“A pro who knows his stuff.”
—Oliver North

John Weisman, whose expertise in the field of covert military operations is unsurpassed, delivers a stunning fictional account of the most extraordinary mission of the century: the hunting down and assassination of Osama Bin Laden, the most reviled killer of the twenty-first century, by US Navy SEALs. With KBL: Kill Bin Laden the critically acclaimed author of SOAR and Jack in the Box goes behind the headlines, carrying readers along on a breakneck, breathtakingly realistic chase—from planning to training to execution—as the evil mastermind behind the horror of 9/11 is finally brought to justice.

Amazon Exclusive: A Q&A with Author John Weisman

Q: You've said that the truth about Operation Neptune Spear can best be told in fiction. Why is that?

Weisman: Because the people who put Neptune Spear together and carried it out aren’t talking, and won’t be, for some time. And all the factual accounts so far have been colored by who sourced them. There’s a lot of political spin about Neptune Spear: the White House has its own version. So do the operators, and so does the CIA. There were so many contradictory accounts that after talking to sources both in the military, the intelligence community, and political operatives, I decided that the best way to go was fiction. The gist of what they all told me was that I’d get closer to the truth by doing fiction—and equally important, get a lot more help that way.

Q: In writing KBL as a novel, you were able to create characters that really touch the reader, for example, your retired Ranger Master Sergeant, Charlie Becker. Did giving a voice to soldiers like Charlie play a part in your wanting to write KBL as fiction?

Weisman: Of course. To me, Charlie Becker represents the best we have in our armed services. He is a patriotic, mission-driven individual who has seen it all, has been horribly wounded, and yet still wants to contribute, to give something back to the nation. What I really respect is the fact that his most deadly weapon isn’t a gun—it’s his mind. Like so many Tier One operators, he will outthink you, and then he will kill you. I know dozens of soldiers like Charlie Becker, maybe even scores. Some are wounded warriors who have returned to action. Some work the covert side for CIA’s Ground Branch, or make the jump to case officer. Others work at the Asymmetric Warfare Group, or the CAG, or are SEALs or Rangers. I am in awe of what they do, and the sacrifices that they are willing to make so that we can sleep safe in our beds at night. And I hope I do them justice in KBL.

Q: There are other accounts of this mission, why should readers choose to buy KBL?

Weisman: Well, if I were being frank, I’d say first of all it’s a better read than any of the others. It’s also the first holistic book about Neptune Spear, by which I mean it deals not just with the SEAL portion, but also the political tussles, the yearlong CIA operation, and all the internal debates that took place before the president finally gave the go-ahead. And I also believe—and I’ve been told by friends in Tier One units who saw the manuscript—that I got things pretty much spot on.

Q: Why do you feel it was important to write the book? Why do you think people should know “the truth” about what happened?

Weisman: It was important because this was the culmination of a ten-year hunt that has cosmic significance for us as a nation. And since it is going to take some years for people to know “the truth” about what actually happened, I felt I could get a pretty good picture out sooner than that.

Review

“A stunner and a riveting read. KBL is rife with realism and a true-to-life portrayal of hard-core warriors, their ethos and their world.” (Dan Rather )

KBL is the latest of his books that probe beneath the facts of world-changing events to expose the deeper meanings and truths and lay bare the raw passions of people who throw themselves into such situations.” (John Perkins, New York Times bestselling author of Confessions of an Economic Hit Man )

Based on three decades of dogged, accurate and mature reporting, Weisman has developed credibility inside the secret community of special ops. This book ties together the strands of detective work, spy craft and commando skills.” (Bing West, author of The Village, The Strongest Tribe and The Wrong War )

“A down and dirty thriller.” (Kirkus Reviews )

“Absolutely gripping.
KBL: Kill Bin Laden describes a true story that can only be told in fiction. It also enthrallingly shows how SEALs are the future of warfare in the 21st century.” (Robert Baer, former CIA officer and New York Times bestselling author of See No Evil )

“Weisman’s research is excellent, and he clearly has expert sources. He’s adept at explaining the complex structure of the special operations units . . . As a former MI6 agent who’s used to reading inaccuracies in thrillers, I was delighted to note that every chapter here feels right.” (Washington Post )

“A book worth reading, not to mention adding to the home, school, and public libraries in every town and city in America. If you want to learn how the brave men and women of our special forces and intelligence agencies really do business . . . pick up a copy.” (US Daily Review )

Seven time New York Times bestselling author John Weisman is one of a select company of authors to have their books on both the Times nonfiction and fiction bestseller lists. He pioneered coverage of Naval Special Warfare when he co-authored the No. 1 NY Times bestseller "Rogue Warrior," then conceived, created, developed, and wrote eight best-selling Rogue sequels.

Pulitzer Prize-winning author Seymour Hersh called his 2004 novel "Jack in the Box" 'The insider's insider spy novel.'

Bestselling author Joseph Wambaugh says of Weisman, "Nobody writes better about the dark, dirty, and dangerous world of the CIA..."

Former CIA case officer and bestselling author Robert Baer says, "John Weisman takes the reader into the very heart of CIA and its special operations."

John's latest special operations novel based on true events was "KBL - KILL BIN LADEN." Sourced and reported as if it were nonfiction, the book was released in November 2011 to universally laudatory reviews.

Bing West, America's foremost writer on war-fighting called "KBL" "An extraordinary look inside Special Operations Fores at the team level." The Iron Mountain Daily News wrote, "Weisman has penned an account that, though technically a work of fiction, resonates with credibility."

And despite two alleged "nonfiction" accounts of Operation Neptune Spear, there are more than a few Special Operations Forces warriors who describe Weisman's "KBL: Kill Bin Laden" as the book that comes closest to holistically capturing the political and military gestalt surrounding the historic Abbottabad raid.

John Weisman lives on Florida's Gulf Coast.

Bottom Line Up Front: I couldn't put this book down. It is simply outstanding.

John Weisman has written a narrative that seamlessly blends fact and fiction, leaving the reader wondering where the one stops and the other starts. He has ripped more than a years worth of headlines from the AfPak conflict (most notably the Raymond Davis saga--upon which he puts an clever spin) to create a story that is fast paced and incredibly realistic. It doesn't matter how much of it is fact and how much is pure fiction. If you want a second by second accouint of what is was like in Abottabad in the early hours of 2 May 2011, it doesn't get any better than this.

Had a hard time putting it down, many parts kept you reading. It was very neat how fiction was so close to truth.

For me regardlesss of the nature or subject of ANY book, it MUST be entertaining.
Sufficiently entertaining to overcome any negatives the book may include, or errors
made by the author.
For me the continual references towards religion/faith/belief were needless and not
a soun d element of the telling of the story.
The shallow and callow of Washington players are easily identified and tend to be fun, if infuriating in their accuracy.
Slow Joe Biden leapt off the pages with his crudity and trademarked stupidity.
HOWEVER,...the book was sufficiently entertaining to overcome the self inflicted weaknesses.
And THAT is good enough for me.
Good enough for a FIVE STAR review.

Not a bad read overall, but the publication of "No Easy Day" has relegated "KBL: Kill Bin Laden" to the remainder bin. Why read a fictional tale when you can read a first-hand account of the real deal? Nonetheless, I read KBL with the Kindle app on my iPod and it was like every other ebook I've read - fraught with a variety of typographical, formatting and logical errors. For example, at locations 5919 and 6899 there's a reference to returning to the "logger." This should be the "laager." This sort of error completely disrupts my reading experience, and try though I might I can't help but notice 'em. On balance KBL was consistent with other books of this ilk, and while not the best book I've read, it wasn't the worst.

I ordered KBL: Kill Bin Laden to be sent on the printing date and it arrived two days later. What a read! Even though you know the outcome, John Weisman has written a riveting story. I could not put it down. The tension from Charlie Becker, the on-site legless CIA agent posing as a beggar, made it all the more real. The interplay between politicians and career military was interesting and occasionally tongue-in-cheek. I have recomended it to all my friends.

Will our generation know the real story? Probably not but Mr Weisman has done a great job in this work. We all want to believe that this is how it went down! Fierce determination that cripples the enemy into shark bait at the end. I would ask the author why he didn't call out the president and SOS by name though? All in all a good read although I would have liked to seen some closure on the home front regarding the family aspect of the warriors sent into harms way. A quick and tidy wrap up to a point made during the book would've made it a true feel good ending.

The story is really well written, you can tell that John Weisman is well connected and has inside information. The story is very comprehensive, with a lot of detail on the planning and politics of the mission. I highly recommend this book.

This is a great book. If you read on kindle you MUST have pen and pad available to note the acronyms and their associated groups/teams/bureaus, etc. There is no glossary at the end of the book but i do understand that if you buy the actual book there is a glossary to refer to, it's just not on the kindle. My only difficulty was remembering what letters stood for what groups and how it related to what was going on in the book. I will reread and have my pen and pad available. I would imagine that this viewpoint is closer to the truth than what we were LED to believe from the media. You'll recognize Hillary (with another name) and the President is only referred to as President.......interesting!
