There is absolutely no documentation except what is printed on the PCB's soldermask. Fortunately, very little effort was required to make it work. Simply plugging it into a Windows 7 loaded the proper driver and assigned it a COM port on my machine. The only issue is that the pin marked VCC is not actually connected to anything when you receive the unit. To make VCC work, you need to solder a pair of jumpers on the back of the board (marked on the soldermask). You can feed VCC with the +5V that comes from the USB connection, or from +3.3V that is generated by interface chip itself. The +5V available is only limited by the USB interface. The current available from the +3.3V source is probably limited by the capabilities of the interface chip. I don't really know since I am using +5V.
The interface jumper cables only fit square pins, not the smaller round pins.
Similar to the post of another reviewer, the two items I received did not have the pinout as described and documented, and you have to solder to through-holes on the board if you want to gain access to the signals which were supposed be on the header. In addition, one signal on the header (VCC) requires that a solder bridge be performed to select whether it should be 5V or 3.3V.
All of this is manageable by someone with any expertise, but the fact that the header is not as described means I will have to create another interconnect to add the extra signals. This is a pain and could have been avoided if the product were as described.
To document the six header pins are: DTR, RXI, TXO, VDD (requires solder bridge), CTS, GND.
Signals available via through-hole are: RST, DSR, RTS, 3V3, SPD, SPD\, RI, DCD.
On plugging this board on my Windows 8.1 desktop the drivers were NOT installed automatically, but windows gave me a download link for the driver installation files which I installed and then got the board working immediately. On Ubuntu 14.04 it just worked out of the box without having to install any drivers.
Next I used it to upload the basic blink sketch on a EMSL Diavolino board and Arduino Pro 8MHz 3.3v board (see photo), and both worked perfectly on the first try. So it seems that the converter board can tolerate 5v signal levels as well. The board auto-reset also worked without a problem.
Overall only one thing to complain about, the rx/tx activity leds are missing so it is hard to say if anything is going on during a transfer.
Pololu makes an even cheaper version of this board, but I bought this one since I wanted a USB A plug instead of micro USB.
I got this for two purposes. 1) So I could program ATMega328 chips on a breadboard without an Arduino. and 2) So an ATMega328 could send information to the Serial port of my computer (useful for debugging).
So far, I can get the chip to send messages to a computer but I cant upload new
Arduino Sketches. When attempting to upload, i get an error: "avrdude: stk500_getsync() attempt 10 of 10: not in sync: resp=0x00".
Because, I expect to figure out the uploading problem, I am giving it 3 stars instead
