Protip: to use this with Freestyler, install the drivers on the disc, and in freestyler, choose "Eurolite usb dmx512pro" as the device and click advanced to select the correct com port. Took me hours to figure this out!

This is a no-frills, USB-to-DMX512 interface module that has worked flawlessly for me. It uses an FTDI chip and was instantly recognized on first use by the signed Windows-7 drivers from FTDI that I use for other microcontroller development (Arduino, etc). I'm using this device with Pure Data patches on a Windows 7 laptop along with TouchOSC to control theatrical lighting via an iPad. This device is perfect for that application and glitch-free. I also like the 1500V isolation it provides -- frying a $40 Arduino is one thing; accidentally frying a $500 laptop is another.

It comes with a mini-CD of drivers and DLL's, supporting both Mac and Windows. You may or may not need them, depending on the application you're using. In my case I needed to install the libUSB0 components for Enttec emulation (found in the X-uDMX512_Driver folder on the mini-disc); the installation is a manual process but very straightforward, with flavors for 32 and 64 bit processor environments.

All in all, this product is exactly what I was looking for. I could wish for better documentation, especially for novices to DMX or computers in general. Sadly the same comment can be applied to every other DMX product I've encountered, so I see no reason to lower my rating on this product. Just be aware that between your finger dragging a virtual fader on a touchscreen and four stagelights coming up, there are a lot of hardware and software components that all have to be flawlessly communicating -- this dongle is only one of them.

Minor update (05/17/2014: I see other reviewers wondering why this unit doesn't come with a 3-pin XLR connector instead of its 5-pin. To be compliant with the present DMX512 standard, devices must use either a 5-pin XLR connector or an 8-pin RJ45.

I purchased this for Sirius Diversions, my mobile DJ business. We used this interface for two proms with Freestyler DMX software, on two different computers. One runs Windows XP, and the other runs Windows 7 Pro. The computers both immediately recognized the interface, and neither required me to run the little CD-ROM which shipped with the interface.

The only thing I would have preferred is for the interface to have the 3-pin "XLR" type connection, instead of the 5-pin. It was simple to order an American DJ 5-pin Male XLR to 3-pin Female XLR Turnaround DMX Cable through Amazon. However, that is another piece to order. Every light I own, and most lights I have seen, rented, or used, all take 3-pin, and some take both. I would have rated this 5 stars if it had that 3-pin built in.

Anyway, order the 5-pin to 3pin converter cable. Also, in my experience, you can run about four lights on XLR cable, without a DMX terminator. However, if you have more than four or five lights, order a DMX terminator, and get yourself some DMX cable, and you should be golden. Our proms had 20 uplights, 8 moving heads, 3 lasers, and 2 scanners, and DMX software with this interface made life so much easier, and made our light show look much more professional. We got so many compliments on the lights.

Took a chance ordering this for use with my Macbook and a Chauvet Swarm FX5 that I bought for doing small dances and parties and was very happy to see it work without a hitch once I found software to use. It has really been a lot of fun! Does provide a 5 pin plug so I had to also get the 5-pin to 3-pin XLR cable to use with the Swarm since it is 3 pin. Make sure you get this too if you have a 3 pin device.

Could not get it to work. Documentation was non-existent. Most of the documentation pointed to the ENTTEC products that this is supposed to emulate. I installed the ENTTEC drivers and messed with it for a couple days. No luck. The drivers all appeared to be in place but I could not get this to be recognized. I am unsure if I got the correct drivers - I used the ones supplied on the disk and ones from the ENTTEC website but neither worked. Very little discussion of this on line. What little out there is are people going "WTF???". I gave up and bought the cheapest ENTTEC DMX-USB for about the same money. I plugged it in and the drivers I installed for this thing kicked in and worked. It hooked up solid and worked right out of the box AND I gave my money to some Australians that actually built the drivers and support them. Skip this and go to the real source.

This is a terrific product for the price. I have used it to replace a regular old-style Etc lighting board at our theater with a laptop and a bunch of DMX-controlled dimmers and some direct control DMX LED lights. Coupled with the open source software QLC+, this is a terrific replacement. QLC+ has a bit of a learning curve but when you figure it all out, it is very nice to use (and completely free, making this lighting "board" cost under $50!)

By the PRO version of this which comes with 5-pin XLR so if you are using prosumer-type DMX lights and dimmers, make sure you get a 5-pin to 3-pin adapter or you will not be able to hook your lights to the KEDSUM controller. AND BY ALL MEANS MAKE SURE YOU HAVE TERMINATED EVERYTHING! If you use DMX Wireless, make sure you terminate EACH INDIVIDUAL RUN that starts at a receiver and ends with the last light on that chain. Even if all the lights are in the same universe, each separate circuit needs its own terminator. They are cheap, they work and they avoid crazy interference being bounced back up the chain from an "open" circuit.
