Her recommendation was excellent, and I have since worn out four pairs. I am 6'3" and weigh 250 lb., so I put shoes to the test.
My Targhee II's last me about two years before they become too "spongy" (alternating between two pairs, in practically daily use).
Before going on a trip to Paris for a couple of weeks with my wife, after which I went to Spain for a couple more weeks, on my own, I was looking for some more dressy shoes that would still be very comfortable for extensive standing in museums and galleries, and the kind of extensive walking I like to do when traveling.
I was delighted to see Keen had finally come out with some mostly leather, "dressier" shoes that are not totally "butt ugly". Thanks to excellent prices in my size on Amazon, I sprang for a black and brown pair.
I have now worn them extensively, putting many (well over 160/100) kilometers/miles on each pair while in France and Spain, which included a LOT of time on cobblestones, and could not be more pleased with them.
My wife and daughters actually complimented me on how "nice looking" they are, but I think that is only because they are less ugly, in their eyes, than the Ecco's I wore for years, before I discovered Keens.
Like my Targhee II's, they run a little large, but that means they have exactly the right amount of space needed to accommodate my big feet sheathed in well-padded socks I often wear to minimize pain from heel spurs/fascitis. They are no so large, however, that they are not comfortable with thinner socks.
I absolutely LOVE these shoes, and will undoubtedly wear out quite a few pair in the years to come (God willing), as long as they continue to wear well, and Keen keeps making them.
The leather is quite thick and smooth but scuff easily. Stitching is quite good but that only alllies to the leather upper. The sole is glued to the mid sole so it may detach in a few years’ time. The rubber of the outer sole wears fast and streaks brown under the black outsole. It is quite flexible and soft but doesn’t look durable.
The pair I got came with one set of laces way shorter than the other. The laces unravel easily so you need to tie them in a double knot.
So far these shoes haven’t fallen apart after 2 years but they are uncomfortable to the point that I don’t prefer to wear them over other similar shoes I have. And they haven’t really molded to the shape of my foot.
Because the footbed is so stable, he doesn't miss the ankle support a more conventional work boot would have. Work boots actually bother his ankles a bit because his bones stick out so much, and these don't rub them. I would highly recommend Keen's if you're on your feet a lot and have high arches, and these in particular if you work in some kind of fabrication setting, like an artist's studio, welding shop, hot glass studio, or kitchen.
Update: as promised, I'm updating the review. The pain in the right heel is totally gone now and these are now perfect shoes.
I swear that manufacturers are messing with the sizing of shoes and clothing. I'm done growing. I'm the same size, but sometimes it's a mystery trying to figure out proper sizes.
I would recommend these shoes to my friends and enemies. They are comfortable, appear to be durable and of high quality.
Overall I am very satisfied with this purchase. As an added bonus these shoes are Made in the USA! How many pairs of shoes in your closet can you say that about? Way to go Keen!!!
