Putting the "light" in light hiker

I have been a big fan of Keen's hiking sandals, so I bought these for hiking this summer around California and Montana. I figured the soles of the Newport H2 in a hiking boot body would be a perfect hiking boot. That is not what these are.

My Keen sandals provide excellent support and torsional rigidity with a very comfortable sole. These things didn't even give me enough support to walk across my apartment comfortably. Very flimsy build that's actually lighter squishier and far less supportive than the sandals.

These basically feel like flimsy running shoes with no arch support and a high top. If you don't need a supportive shoe and you just want a hiking boot-looking shoe to wear around, these could be for you (they are pretty nice looking), but anyone looking for an off-road shoe or something with arch support, look elsewhere. I recommend the Oboz Bridger, or, for higher volume feet the new Keen Durand.

These are great boots! They are very comfortable though I do need to wear thinner socks than I typically wear with my other Keens. Very light and even after 10 hours standing on concrete my feet still feel good. I did swap out the factory insoles for a set of Superfeet insoles, I have abnormally high arches.

Good for all sorts of hikes

I'll start with the negatives: sort of a thin sole so if you walk on rocks then you can feel them under your foot. I put in an orthopedic pad which helped a lot. Also, there wasn't much ankle support for the occasional misstep. I took them on a 14 mile hike the third time I wore them and I felt like I needed a bit more ankle support.

On a positive note they are extremely light, and very soft on the inside. I use mirano wool socks to hike with, so those tend to help with blisters but I didn't have any sort of blisters. The next day the only things sore were my legs, so my feet were completely fine. Very waterproof and the laces are very easy to tie.

The absolute best hiking boots I have ever owned. They fit wonderful on the first wear. I am sixty years old and these KEEN boots blow away any pair of Merrell or other boots I have owned. I wear these on long hikes with my Aussie and around the farm.
