One concern I've always had with mid-boots is irritation from rubbing on my ankle bones. This was not a problem at all. We did some pretty rugged hiking; natural soils, rocks, steep inclines, etc., and not once did I experience any slipping and my feet stayed stable in the boots. There was plenty of room in the toe box to protect against jamming on steep descents.
As far as being waterproof, although I didn't step thru any streams or major puddles, they stayed completely dry, despite a LOT of wet weather (August is during the rainy season in AK). I also wore them just walking around town on the cool and rainy days, and my feet stayed warm and dry.
The only reason these got four stars instead of five, is that I wish they had just a bit more arch support and bottom padding. I have rather high arches, and although I had no pain whatsoever, my feet did get a little tired by the end of the day. However, all of the positives far outweigh that minor negative, and I feel this purchase was well worth the money spent. I will try wearing some arch supports next time to see if that makes a difference.
They are not heavy so my legs don't get tired on those 10 hour days. I tried on 10 different brands of hiking mid boots and these were the most comfortable for my feet and ankles. I would purchase them again. I usually wear 8.5 or 9 I bought a 9.5.
These are my first pair of Keens. I bought them a half-size larger as recommended, and am glad for that. I chose Keen based on the opinions of a "Buy it for life" forum. I thought they were a good investment and would last a long time. So far I've worn them for about six short and easy hikes; nothing too crazy. Tonight I was trying them on to check the length on a new pair of cargo pants. I was lacing them up and JUST as I was thinking how great these shoes are and I'm glad I chose them, one of the top loops broke open -- not 20 minutes ago, sitting here in the comfort of my own home. Apparently this is a thing because I see other customers have the same complaint. Apparently this flaw isn't a one-time fluke for one unlucky customer.
I'm not particularly happy these boots couldn't last 2 months of easy wear without something falling apart. I will scratch Keen from my "buy it for life" list and keep looking.
