About the author

Lynn Bohart loves to kill people for fun and profit - on paper that is. She comes to writing after thirty-five years as a nonprofit executive, where she raised millions of dollars for multiple good causes. She retired in 2018 to launch her own freelance writing company Lil Dog Communications and now writes for nonprofits and individuals all over the world.
Ms. Bohart holds a master's degree in theater (directing) and has taught both acting and directing. With such a strong background in theater, she tends to write as if she were creating the story for the big screen. "I visualize every scene in my head," she says, "as if I were watching a movie. I often do it while I'm driving - which means you probably wouldn't want to be in the lane next to me at the time."
She has been published in “Woman's World” and "Dead on Demand", an anthology of ghost stories which rose to #13 on the Library Journal Bestsellers List. She also wrote a weekly column for Patch.com and a monthly column for the Renton Reporter. She has taught writing classes through Kent Parks & Recreation and currently through Green River College.
As a dog lover and canine rescue advocate, she weaves dogs into all her novels. In fact, they play major roles. "I want the dogs to be realistic, though," she says. "I don't like books that make animals seem like cartoon figures."
Ms. Bohart now has eight paranormal mystery novels on Amazon, along with two short story books. Her most popular series is the Old Maids of Mercer Island. The first book in that series, "Inn Keeping With Murder" remained on Amazon's top 100 ghost story list for over 10 months and has over 600 reviews and maintains a 4.5 star average.
Her most recent novel, "The Essence of Murder", which used a group of wannabe vampires as the means for murder, was launched on Halloween in 2020. "My beta readers said this was the best book yet," she says. She is hard at work now on the fifth book in the Old Maids of Mercer Island series, which will involve a historical look at Jack the Ripper and secret societies. The bit of paranormal activity is an added plus that makes this cozy mystery a great read. I loved that the amateur sleuths are all seniors that enjoy looking at great looking men when they see one! I will not say anymore except to recommend that you read this book, and I know you will enjoy the many twists the author throws in to keep you guessing. The villains catch you by surprise. I look forward to reading more by this author.
The women involved are all unique individuals with well-defined and varied personalities, yet the friendship is genuine and believable despite their differences. I wasn’t a fan of the ghostly aspects, I didn’t think it was necessary, but they were inserted well into the story and weren’t a distraction except for one instance. The constant phone-ringing during the climax of the story, which was meant to cause confusion and frustration to the antagonists of the story, also served to irritate me, and I thought it unnecessarily bogged down the pace at a crucial moment. But that is a tiny personal quibble of mine in what is, overall, a thoroughly enjoyable, fun mystery. I’m looking forward to joining the girls on their next adventure when the sequel comes out.
I usually round my half star reviews downward, but in this case I don't want the author's ratings to suffer due to my personal preferences. I would recommend this title without hesitation to mystery lovers as well as those who like a touch of the paranormal in their stories.

The book begins with an apparent suicide and continues for quite a while without any apparent murder, and although the reader realises there is something fishy going on, it's quite some time before the characters in the book do. I felt a little as though I was marking time during this gentle introduction to the main characters, setting and social set-up, but it was so charming I didn't mind too much.
Five friends, spurred on by the final words of their dying friend, form a social club - The Old Maids of Mercer Island - and start taking life by the short and curlies, doing all the activities they missed out on when they were younger. Then, at one of their meetings, a member drops dead and Julia Applegate, owner of the St. Claire Inn, a house with a history and more than one opinionated ghost, finds herself suspected of murder - poison in her home-made fudge, no less.
Numerous red herrings are cast in the reader's path, though few of them look particularly tempting. The characters are really what make the story, and although I had a pretty good idea of the culprit and the reason for the murders fairly early on, it was still fun to watch the ladies work it out, and the climax, with a little help from the ghosts, is fast, a little crazy, and satisfying.
I can't finish without mentioning Julia's two dachshunds and the visiting Great Dane - all of them with parts to play.
This is a light hearted book, with a cast of very unlikely sleuths, a good dash of humour and a sprinkling of the supernatural. In the right mood, I would definitely read another.

The writing is descriptive and emotive, and the storyline is compelling. There is a broad range of characters, some likeable, some less so, who are fleshed out just enough to allow the reader to picture them I'm their mind's eye.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good murder mystery/thriller.
