Product Description

Color: Black Oak

The Q100s are the smaller model of the Q300 bookshelf speakers, but don’t be fooled by their size! The Q100 prominently features our point-source Uni-Q driver array, which is engineered to produce an exceptionally accurate, three-dimensional soundstage that evenly envelopes any room. The 5.25 inch Uni-Q driver array with a 1 inch aluminum dome tweeter at its acoustic center. This Uni-Q driver array offers fast and clean midrange response, thanks to a braced magnesium/aluminum alloy cone and with KEF’s Z-flex surround smoothing the transition to the front panel. Based on the state-of-the-art HF driver developed for our flagship Blade, the Q100 boasts a much larger dome tweeter for increased sensitivity and distortion-free power handling. The KEF Q100 stands just under a foot tall, making it perfect for any bookshelf, home entertainment system, or smaller area in your home. The Q100 can also be paired up with any floorstanding speakers, center channels, or subwoofers from the KEF Q Series as a home theater system, ensuring an even and outstanding audio experience.

# Overview

Someone from the thread upgraded his Audio Engine P4 to those Q100, I took the same path.
Bottom line: this is ay and night in my office room.

I pair the speakers with a Denon DRA-N5 (see here: http://amzn.com/B0090I9VQW) I bought a year and half ago. The setup is full digital: the computer is connected to the amp using a TOSlink cable.

# Audio Performance

Even if they probably desserve a proper burn-in period, I can tell the difference on the lows and highs, extremes are perfectly set, the stage is very clear even on difficult tracks.

I was a bit afraid as they have relatively low sensitivity of 86 dB would be to short for a mini system (rated 2 x 65W, readers should be aware this means absolutely nothing), the volume is really good. At night, I set 4 (of 60) and really enjoy the clarity of the sound.

# Finish

It is not glossy white, but a very smooth and soft white. Finish could have been a little better but you can’t ask too much for this budget.

# Accessories

The speaker can be hang on a wall. They also provide pads to stick below the speaker to ensure a good isolation.
For those interested, the front grills come in black. I asked Kef front grill doesn't exist in white.

For those interested in a more high end finish, you might consider the R serie or even the beautiful LS50. Outside Kef, the shortlist was the B&W 686/685 S2, Monitor Audio Silver and Magnat Quantum Edelstein, almost impossible to find here in North America.

I have owned these for over a year. They are very good with certain tasks, perfectly capable of resolving rhythmic passages, percussion and bass especially it can handle with ease. With the bung plugs installed, the claimed flat response curve results in agile bass and low end. I didn't know what to expect when I first bought these so I ordered the Q400 sub as well, but sold it a few months later as these are perfectly capable of pumping goodly amounts of lows. Initially, I had thoughts of returning them because of the tweeter sounding incredibly harsh and un-refined when new, but it has calmed down and smoothed out and sounds better, if a bit thin and delicate.

Two things this speaker doesn't do in a stellar fashion happens in-between the highs and lows. The midrange becomes a bit of a crapshoot, as these KEFs have the typical "dark" British sound. Dark as in certain sounds or instruments will be well back in the mix where they shouldn't be, but vocals are waaaay forward, almost karaoke-like. The overall feeling I get from Q100s is that they present an attractive but ultimately unbalanced sound.

Due to the design of their Uni-Q technology, and the very wide dispersion of the driver, imaging is not what I would call "holographic". These drivers are designed to sound good almost anywhere in the room and although you can hear some nice separation between sounds when these are properly set up, they don't quite make it in the 3D imaging department.

I've had these a few months and I have to say they are excellent. They are incredibly detailed with a very flat frequency response... Basically they are KEF's entry to their UNI-Q driver... And with these you are paying mostly for the driver. The finish looks like vinyl, but it's fine. I think they look nice. I took out the driver and the port terminals to have a look. The cabinet has thin walls with no bracing, however they doubled up the MDF on the section that the driver attaches to the front... Not the whole front wall, just the section it's absolutely necessary... I guess that's engineering though, using only what's necessary and KEF is known for its high level engineering.. It does the job so hey.. But for this purpose (small bookshelf) It is not as much of a compromise as it would be on one of the Q towers (and bracing can be added along with extra damping, I bought some Dynamat and added this to the insides. I also replaced the polyfill with long haired wool (Caveat, KEF has the amount exactly right, too little or too much and to close to the driver the speaker gets muddy, muffled or boomy. If you intend to strip out the polyfill and replace I'd think twice. After many hours I got it right but I'm not sure it made any difference. I think the dynamat helped though.

The sound is very good, they got the ports tuned perfectly, the bass will surprise you. I have mine paired with a sub though as I feel less excursion on the drivers, clears up the mid range and the treble. There is very little to fault with these, I found the treble a decibel too much, but I turned it down... And it's fine (But this was at at the start, I've since put it back... I feel like the tweeters just get clearer over time, it's really settled down now). There is nothing bad to say about these.

Amazing bookshelf speakers. The soundstage and clarity of these are amazing. It also puts out an impressive amount of bass for 5.25" drivers. I'd attribute a bit of that to the Uni-Q driver design. Bi-amping also made a significant difference in everything!

I use this as the beginning of my home theater 2.1 setup. It's a work in progress, but quite honestly, it is way more balanced and clear than the budget 5.1 setup I had before. I love just playing music with the volume up and melting into my couch. Greatest past time ever.

The best part is that I got these for $350 during Amazon's quiet Black Friday sale. Score!

Elegant, amazing sound quality, and bi-amp features! No regrets. Do it and don't look back! Ok, ending this review because I need to go listen to music now. DO IT!!!!!
