One thing I appreciated is that the speakers have ZERO noticeable white noise or hiss whether on or on standby. I've tried similar speaker systems from other brands and they all exhibited a noticeable hiss when on and not in use or when listening to something with the volume on low. That stuff really bugs me and forced me to return these models (which cost less than half of this one). These babies are absolutely silent, with zero noticeable white noise or crackle.
UPDATE: I had problems with the auto standby (it was working as intended, but in USB mode this can cause problems depending on the application). I contacted KEF and they sent me a firmware update that lets you disable this feature. So now I can give these five stars.
These are true audiophile speaks with perfect sound. They perfectly complement my acer chrome desk top and the bluetooth csr x connection is excellent.
Bass is ample, for classical music.
Break-in is necessary - about 12 hours. Break-in greatly improves instrument separation and clarity which are very good, at least for speakers. Sound image is great; they provide an excellent near-field listening experience.
Compared with X300A, EGG is preferred for several reasons:
1) Price. I got mine on prime day. The price was less than half of X300A's. If you buy the X300A, you inevitably tend to invest more on CD player/DAC/Amp. But with EGG, I can say that I'm done investing on audio hardware.
2) 4.25'' vs 5''. Even though sound-wise X300A is better than EGG, smaller drivers serve a particular purpose: desktop. Smaller drivers are designed to fit in near-field listening.
3) Placement. If you get X300A, you'd better buy some rack (additional cost). In contrast, EGG has integrated stand and is engineered to position the drivers at an angle for delivering sound directly toward your ears in stead of chest. Bigger drivers require longer distance from the wall (EGG is engineered so that the distance from wall no longer matters) and between speakers. To accomplish that, you have to compromise desk/room space.
I hardly ever use Bluetooth and it works great in this device, but it can be connected to by any device even while the speaker is on standby mode. I woke up one night to them playing music loudly since one of my neighbors found he could connect to them. That is funny, but not so much when it happens to you. I don't understand why KEF engineers overlooked this, there is no potential benefit to have the Bluetooth this way. When I contacted them, they said they dont have any solution for it right now, and I should connect it to a power strip and switch them off when not in use. Overall I am very unhappy with the response and the workaround. I like listening to music as I fall asleep, waking up to switch them off defeats the purpose. They are really expensive for what they are and I would not have minded the cost if they did not have such a stupid flaw.
EDIT 1 - KEF does not allow negative reviews to be posted on their site and I believe this is a very bad sign and brings down my trust in the company even though I have loved their products in the past. To reflect that I am taking the stars from 3 to 2.
Edit 2 - I was sent a firmware update using which I can keep them always on and connected to my desktop thereby preventing them from getting connected via bluetooth, not a great work around but acceptable, since I still have to power them off completely using the power strip.
Edit 3 - Well I used to turn them off every morning before going to work, sadly this evening when I came home and tried turning them on they would not turn on. I have written to KEF regarding this, hope they have a solution for this soon enough.
Edit 4 - Customer service was pretty good on KEF's part, I got immediate replies to all my emails, I bought these in Canada and they have deal going on for KEF X300As for CAD $700. Since I had paid CAD $600 for these they allowed me to upgrade to those for the difference, even though I bought these 3 months back. X300A are really amazing and way better than these, really happy with those. I wish they came with a remote like these but I am so happy with the performance that I can say I am completely satisfied!
I'll leave the review as it is. I will change the rating from 2 stars - 3 stars to reflect the customer service, I still wish they did not censor the reviews on their site. No more updates.
