KEF X300AW Digital Hi-Fi Speaker System
Listen to music as it's intended to be heard.
Whether you're recording your own music or listening to someone else's, your need the proper speakers to accurately produce every little detail of the performance. Fortunately, you've found the KEF X300AW digital hi-fi speaker system.
You'll be able to channel audio through your X300AW digitally with a 96kHz/24-bit USB input, or through an analog auxiliary input. Each X300AW speaker has one point-source Uni-Q driver array, a dedicated class AB amplifier, and a dedicated digital analog converter (DAC) to ensure a precise performance that fully captures the nuances and raw power of your music.
Built for Audiophiles
The X300AW's 24-bit/96kHz USB input is able to carry up to three times more data than the audio on a normal CD, allowing the speakers to reproduce the complexity of high resolution music files. Additionally, a high quality DAC in each speaker virtually eliminates interference by separating decoding from playback.
All this audiophile technology is complemented by our very own point-source Uni-Q driver array, which is used in our flagship speaker, the Blade. The result is a spacious, accurate and exquisitely detailed sound field, whatever device your music is played from.
The X300AW requires minimum setup. Simply plug both speakers into a power source, connect the two speakers with the X300AW's USB cable, and you're all set. Gain and audio balance can be adjusted accordingly via two knobs on the back of each speaker, and bass levels can be set with push of a button to best suit your listening space. The X300AW also gives you the freedom to stream music wirelessly via Airplay or DLNA from your computer, smartphone or any other mobile device.
If your X300AW speakers are placed against a wall, you can insert the foam bung supplied into the rear reflex port for tighter, cleaner, bass performance.

The X300A Wireless powered speaker allows listeners to plug into their PC or Mac via a distortion-free USB connection for a sonic experience that is far beyond the average digital hi-fi speaker. Any device with a headphone port — such as an iPhone, iPad, or Kindle Fire — can also connect directly to the speakers with an analogue auxiliary cable. Within minutes of unboxing your X300A speakers, you'll immediately notice that your digital music library has exceptionally more warmth, detail, and depth. To create this rich sound image, the X300A Wireless boasts two Class AB audiophile amplifiers — one dedicated for LF/MF, and another for high frequencies per speaker — as well as two digital audio convertors (DACs). This ensures that your audio files will play back without distortion or noisy digital artifacts. Furthermore, the X300A Wireless contains toroidal transformers that can be found in the top audiophile amps, which nullify speaker hum and electromagnetic interference. I was looking for speakers worthy of my new Mac Pro ($5,000) and NEC PA271W monitor. I bought the X300A Wireless and have listened as they went through their break-in. The sound keeps improving. They have wonderful detail in the mid- and high end. I read reviews on them lacking bass. From my viewpoint, the soundstage and resolution is wonderful and the bass is impressive for a small speaker that sits on my desk. For, granted, a little more money, they have very good Digital to Analog Convertors in both speakers, digital (via USB) inputs (bypassing the poor performing sound cards in our computers), and two Class A/B amps in both units.
I've had no problems streaming from my iPhone with AirPlay.
Are they reference speakers? No. If you want the best, get the KEF Blades. But they'll set you back about $20K before you buy a DAC and power amps - and good luck fitting those on your desk.
With my Mac Pro Mac running OSX 10.11.2, I went into Applications/Utilities/Audio MIDI Setup, clicked on KEF X300A Speaker, and set Format to 96000.00 Hz and 2ch-24bit Integer. This does allow full use of the 96kHz 24 bit DAC, which is twice the resolution of the Audioengine A5, which doesn't have a digital USB input.
For me the X300As were worth the price. I will likely enjoy them for 20 years. If you want to save a few hundred dollars, look at the Audioengine A5+. If you're short on desk space, the Audioengine A2+ are only $250, and will still sound much better than your Mac, PC, laptop, or tablet.
If you need the bass, either connect a subwoofer to the mini speaker on your Mac and configure it for playing all three speakers, or look into a 2.1 system.
In my 10' X 12' office, these fit the bill. And they are solid and attractive.
Cons: the wireless function can only stream mp3 music from the phone or computers. it's not so convenient if watching youtube or pandora on phone.
