From the Author
The idea for this romantic suspense was inspired by my real life experience of being left behind in Italy by my brother and sister. Thankfully they came back for me, and the rest of my trip was much less exciting than Halli's. But I got a book out of the deal, and we all still laugh about it.
Kidnapped by Stacey Joy Netzel is one of those books that is suspense thriller first and romance second. The plot is convenient Hollywood-ish, and the dialog is... sparkling, and can serve as textbook example of how to flirt. The female protagonist's headstrong ness can be mistaken for just stupidity but is in fact a coping mechanism for her life. And there is plenty of plot, enough for a Hollywood movie even though it's filled with Hollywood tropes like enemies shooting at hero's car but always hit mirrors and windows, and hero will always escape a boat blowing up by diving off its deck just in time. You get the idea. But it works, right?
The plot is simple enough... A hyper-organized Wisconsin TV producer Halliwell "Halli" Sanders organized a trip with her brother and sister to Lake Cuomo, Italy down to the minute. So she was definitely NOT prepared for her brother and sister leaving her behind (it's an accident, I swear!) at the lake because she was filming the swans and a little late getting back into the car. And she's DEFINITELY not ready for internationally star Trent Tomlin pulling up in a convertible, checking if she needed a ride. When she hesitated, not falling under his A-list smile, she was definitely not ready for what happened next... He grabbed her, dumped her into his convertible's passenger seat, and sped off, but not before collecting three bullets and various broken mirrors. That sort of things only happen in Hollywood movies, right?
Trent knew exactly why they've been shot at... Halli's camera had caught death of a ex-police Lorenzo, who was helping Trent investigating his brother's "suicide" a few months ago. And now the evildoers have nabbed brother Ben and sister Rachel Sanders as "insurance" while they scour the countryside looking for the Halli and the camera. Halli on the other hand is not taking any of this, even escaping from Trent to the Italian police, not understanding that Italian police had been penetrated by this evildoers. And only by the thinnest of margins did they manage to escape...
Trent is in way over his head, as he's a star, and the really tough stuff is handled by stunt doubles, and he can't believe that this "plain Jane" is somehow resistant to his star power, but he needs her alive, and her footage to find his brother's killers. Halli is also in way over her head, trying to survive in a strange country and rescue her siblings, with the only man she can trust being her kidnapper... Trent, even as she admits she is NOT completely resistant to his charms.
And together, they will hatch a plan... somehow they will rescue both siblings and bring the bad guys to justice... for they have help, even though they don't know it yet. But can they survive each other first?
The plot twists are not that significant, except near the end, but it's too... "soap opera-ish". There's a LOT of flirting, but only one major bed scene. All in all, it's fun ride if a bit full of tropes.
When I purchased this book, the title was Lost in Italy, but somewhere along the way, it was changed to Kidnapped. It had me confused for a little while.
I found this book compelling. I was hooked from the beginning, when Halli was left behind by her brother and sister. Then, she's practically kidnapped in order to save her life! The plot was well constructed, the dialogue believable. I couldn't wait for the next catastrophe to strike. Halli held up through all of it, even beginning to enjoy spur of the moment changes in plan.
There were a few editorial problems that I found. First, the author used the nonword "alright". All right is the only acceptable form in edited writing. Basically, it is not all right to use alright in place of all right in standard English. I also discovered missing words, and occasionally the wrong word used. These mistakes were a bit distracting, but not enough to cause me to stop reading.
I started to delete this one from my Kindle, thinking that it was a shame I didn't enjoy it enough to finish reading it... and then I remembered that I DID finish reading it. It was so forgettable. Not one I'd recommend.
I do remember commenting to my husband that anytime the main characters, Trent and Halli, (who have known each other all of five minutes, mind you) are around each other... they just can't seem to control their desire for the other. It was annoying. I know they were on a deadline to heat up the romance, but still. Too unbelievable for me.
It took me several tries to get into thus book but I'm glad I eventually came back to it, because it was truly worth reading (to me). I like adventure, romance, suspense, ans a little action, and I got all of this delivered with characters I liked. I don't really care about the location where this adventure occurred but the author's descriptions certainly made me able to envision every detail. This story definitely piques my interest in reading the rest if the series.
I got this book for free from Book Bub and just finished it. Wow, was I surprised, one of the best I've read in awhile. Story was well laid out, characters well developed and it had a number of surprises throughout the book. The last few chapters were hard to put down with twists and turns in each chapter. This was not a cliffhanger, which I hate but I won't run the ending by saying more. Definitely a good read.
