I started back up at a Muay Thai gym last year which goes heavy on kick drills and kick sparring in class. At my last gym we mainly kicked pads (and not each other) so shin guards weren't really required if you didn't opt to spar separately. I did a ton of research on shin guards and opted initially for Twins. Suffice it to say I got kicked once wearing them and soon realized they did not offer the kind of protection I needed. Lesson learned the hard way. So I asked around my gym, looked a what people were wearing and read a ton more reviews. The second time around I went with a not inexpensive pair of Venums. I had been using Venum gloves which I loved and lots of people at the gym had them and loved them. A couple of weeks later I was kicked, quite coincidentally, in the same place as before. The kick felt like it went "right through" the Venums which offered no protection to an already injured shin.
At this point I considered giving up and wondered if I was just a wuss or whether there was really a good pair of shin guards out there. Then I looked into Top King - another popular brand at the gym in gloves and shinguards. Let me tell you - I enjoy sparring now because I know I can go up against some of the bigger guys and even if they kick my shins directly I won't want to skulk away and cry. These are legit! They are comfortable without feeling bulky, even while offering substantial protection and unlike a lot of my partners who are constantly re-adjusting their guards, I find these stay in place quite well. They also cover more of my feet, unlike some brands I see which leave toes exposed. You do not want your toes to be kicked anymore than you want your shins kicked - so more protection over the feet is nice.
My only complaint is that as a female with shorter but slightly "stockier" calves, the straps felt a little short initially and I had trouble looping the lower strap in particular through the hook and having enough left over to velcro. As they have stretched (and I have gotten skinnier) this has been less of an issue. I just wish they provided slightly more strap length from the outset. The hook part is also a little tight initially and somewhat difficult to get the strap through but this also widens with use; just know that initially it might take a little longer to get these on.
So overall - let me save you time and injury - order these - and you won't regret it!
Another thing worth mentioning is the material/crease where the bottom of the shin protection meets the base of the foot pad. It feels pretty uncomfortable to me. I find it really digs into the top of my foot. But I'm hoping in time they will either break in a bit or that part of my foot will toughen up to the point it's no longer an issue. Kind of odd I haven't seen this mentioned in other reviews though.
Last thing... if you need these in a hurry I highly recommended paying the extra $2 for expedited shipping. These got from Thailand to my front door in the U.S. in two days. Pretty impressive.
Update Dec 2018: They did accept the return and sent me medium to replace the small size. I have been using them and they are good. But I am finding that many of the fughters use shin guards that cover at least a part of the knee as well. I have been hit in the knee a few times. So I am going to try a different brand or maybe order the large size of this one to see if Ican get some knee protection as well.
