This book covers many fundamentals of stop animation including single brick movement, time lapse structure builds, character movement (walking, skateboarding, dancing, costume changes), how to position items to give the effect of speed (car races), and how to position items to give the effect of dynamic movement such as falling or throwing items. Asides from movement, I liked how this book explored camera angles for dramatic effect, the importance of coming up with a script/story, storyboarding, set designs, lighting, and sound effects. Including the table of contents, there are 62 pages of LEGO movie making fun to explore, 3 double sided fold out backgrounds (6 backgrounds total), one storyboard template/movie clapper board image, and 36 LEGO mini fig pieces/props/pegboard.
While my kids did enjoy this set, there are a few things I found lacking in this set. The two largest issues I have with this set is that this set is that
1) this set comes with a tiny 2"x2" pegboard
2) this set does NOT come with any type of app to actually utilize with the LEGO stopmotion.
The pegboard, while it does work, is simply not large enough to do much with. It's so small that you can see whatever frame your camera angle is in, and is too small for your character to do much more run in place. While I know most parents who buy this for their kids is likely to have a huge set of LEGOs and thus likely a large pegboard to begin with, it would be nice to have the larger pegboard included for those who have smaller sets. The second issue - the lack of a designated stop animation app - was really the reason for the star deduction. While there are a lot of great stop animation apps out there to use, as well as iMovie, Windows Movie Maker, and so forth, all of those apps require some form of learning curve, which would've been great to have explained in the book itself. With a designated app to follow along with, there would be a lot less questions, complaints, and frustration from my kids when they couldn't figure out how to utilize something in the various apps. That said, everything noted in this book can be found in some form online - stop animation tutorials themselves are not all too difficult to find online. To have made this a complete package - information that's easily laid out along with a designated app - would have made this a must buy book for anybody who wanted a beginner's course in stop animation.
Those two issues aside, if your kid has a decent LEGO collection, this book does offer the fundamentals to spark some creativity and hopefully inspiration to create clever movies. The LEGO pieces included are fun for kids to play with, and the explanations are simple to follow. Overall, this a fun gift to get for kids who have LEGO collections and who want more fun ways to play with their sets.
Seriously, the Klutz team has done an outstanding job of cramming in a lot of stop-motion animation information into a relatively few pages. They start at the beginning with a way to test your smartphone or tablet for doing stop-motion animation and, not so coincidentally, learn the fundamentals.
They move quickly, but thoroughly into the basics of stop-motion: arm and head movement, walking and running. These elements involve using the Lego pieces (36 in all) included with the book. It’s a nice, if small, collection and includes heads showing progressive expressions, like a before, during and after smile.
There are six printed backgrounds to use, which is a really nice touch.
Much of the book is given over to shooting and posing techniques. I am frankly surprised the authors and their support team were able to get so much useful info into such a short book.
There’s even a little printed clapboard included, which isn’t terribly usable, but it is cute.
Overall, this is a marvelous book for the aspiring young stop-motion animator. And it is also quite usable for the adult who wants a simple, but thorough and fun introduction to the art of stop-motion animation.
It is made for helping with learning stop motion animation. If you are giving as a gift and your recipient does not already own a large assortment of lego bricks, consider give a set of bricks along with it.
