This is fun, but not as easy to build as legos! My 8 year old daughter got this for Christmas. She enjoyed putting it together with her dad. She can put lego sets together mostly by herself but needed extra help on this one. Some of the pieces are hard to put together and require extra strength.
Its definitely high quality though, and we love the educational aspect of this set as well.
Purchased for my 6 year old daughter. She could construct all of it independently. There were a few pieces she needed help pushing in. She could follow directions without help. She is a highly skilled LEGO builder. We have a couple of these sets and the figures stink. They are hard to put together and don’t stay together very well. I’ve super glued some, but can effect their movements. The kits do stay together well over time and are able to be play with without falling apart. This is a real review, no one has paid me.
Fun set! (I think my 5 year old maybe preferred the airplane.) My daughter seems to prefer KNEX over legos, and as far as buying specific sets, I guess I prefer them too. Often the Lego sets designed for girls seem very teeny-bopper (definitely not where my 5 year old is at), or are Disney princesses (we definitely have enough of that already!). I like how KNEX has designed girl sets that engage the mind and set off the imagination. For days after building this set, my daughter dressed up like a deep sea diver (with a costume of her own design) and she asked so many questions relating to marine biology. We had fun building the set together. I highly recommend.
I like the K’nex products unfortunately I received an old tattered box that looked like it had been opened multiple times and I am also missing the pieces for the girl, I don’t see a ladder and a few other things that are in the picture
My child wants to be a marine biologist, I accidentally came across this toy while shopping on Amazon. My daughters favorite toy from Christmas by far. A few places on the directions were a bit confusing for my 6 year old however with minimal help she nailed this out and now it's proudly displayed in her room. Seems to be well made only complaint is there's not enough parts for the biologist and the mermaid. (Supposed to be that way)

My daughter was excited to create these aquatic scenes with the KNEX set only to discover many of the small pieces were not machined properly and did not fit well together, particularly for the characters. We enjoyed the set building process, but were kind of disappointed by how few different scenarios could be put together. Given that this is trying to adopt the "Goldie Blox" model of merging engineering with story craft, the number of replay options were limited and we ended up just bagging/boxing it up when we were done, probably because the figurines were so poorly built.
That said, we did get a few solid hours of enjoyment from the set, so it's not a total loss, but it would still be kind of costly if you think of money versus time value.
My 6 year old loves to build things. Legos, Minecraft, she loves it all. I thought this was going to be a slam dunk and that she would love it. She did....at first. After a bit she started to get a little frustrated with the directions and asked for my help. What in Ikea were they thinking with these directions? The booklet that I have has the pieces changing color in reference to what section they are building. When you are building with rainbow colored pastel pieces, knowing you have the right color is helpful. She eventually just got annoyed with the directions and built her own thing but hasn't reached for them since. The backdrop is cardboard which lasts forever on a toy </sarcasm>. We got this one on sale to see what types of building toys she prefers and I don't think Mighty Makers will be making the cut in the future.
Really great value for this type of toy. Bought for my 8-year-old and I think she will get hours of enjoyment from it. Looks challenging enough to stave off boredom and be educational too.
