The bracket: It was slightly bent so there was a misalignment of the holes which made it difficult to install the thumb screws; which are lesser quality than the originals. When I tightened them by hand the plastic quickly separated from the screw I opted to use the ones that came with my Gopro.
Functionality: The light seems well made and the output modes are controlled through a single button. It's simple and effective. If I were using this for anything out of the water I'd be pretty happy with it.
Diving: I took it on a dive to 60' and it worked well, especially when mounted to an extension arm with a red filter on the camera. The colors looked great! The following morning the light flooded as soon as I hit 80'. Unlike the GoPro, the Knog has a mini usb port on the side of the battery so water killed the battery as well as the light.
If you're looking for a GoPro light for diving my advice is to keep looking
The light’s housing is metal. When you pick it up it has a little weight and it does not feel cheap. The button on top works well. You just press and hold to turn the light ON or OFF. Pressing the button quickly cycles through the different illumination modes. I really like the way the battery is engineered. It has a separate micro USB port for charging and there is an LED indicator for battery status during charging. Thus with everything I’ve said you would think I would be giving the light a five star rating. Before I left for my vacation, I really thought I had a five star product.
Unfortunately, I did not. After my initial inspection of the light, I noticed the latching mechanism that locks the battery door closed, does not put much pressure on the door due to its design. Using this mechanism seems rather easy if the door is already opened, however; opening the latch is a pain. The seal that stays on the door is rather small and the way it contacts the light housing when closed does not instill confidence that it will remain water tight. This is in contrast to the GoPro, which has a very solid latch and a large seal that clearly gets squeezed when the door is closed. With this said, my suspicions proved correct and the light housing began to leak on my second dive and eventually failed due to complete water penetration. This started at about 45 feet and my max depth was 60 feet. While I was distressed at the light’s failure, I was not going to end my dive or the dive of those that were with me over one hundred dollars.
I give this light one star because I did suffer the loss of capturing family moments under water in what I would consider one of the best diving locations in the world. It’s beyond me why a company would go to so much trouble to design a light that works well, with the exception of a strong latching mechanism and tiny seal. I performed another inspection back at the hotel and could find nothing wrong with the seal or any damage to the housing. I did notice the black paint coating on other areas of the housing was already coming off during saltwater cleanup, adding to my one star. I’m returning this product. I’m going to bite the bullet for a better designed light, even if I have to pay more. It’s not worth the missed moments of an expensive vacation.
One additional note: It wasn’t clear to me that the light came with a mount bar for the light and GoPro. Therefore, I had to purchase one separately. I Hope this information is helpful.
