It manages to strike a fantastic balance of providing inspiration and an underlying bedrock of optimism, without sugar coating the effort, planning, and patience required to execute on the strategies he outlines in the book. This combination of insight, honesty, and pragmatic advice is what makes this book such a great read.
Known offers a fully fleshed out approach - full of practical exercises to help provide focus and direction, case studies to illustrate how people have executed on their personal strategies, and removes the ego from the equation. Becoming known isn't about becoming famous, it's about becoming known. That was an important distinction for an introverted professional like myself that tends to disdain attention seekers.
Mark writes with a personal vulnerability that allows him to be someone who teaches from his own struggles rather than from some floating island of expertise. I think the best praise I can offer this book is that it has spurred me to take real action on my own plan more than any other content I've taken in over the past year. Worth your time and money.
The best part of Mark's advice is he provides numerous examples of how to follow his steps in creating content, in better time management, in finding your audience, or when to abandon an idea. He includes testing on all fronts, giving you the tools to learn from each step.
Mark Schaefer opens the book with a story of how he felt the first day he launched his consulting business and realized his past work as a global marketing executive did not count toward becoming known in his new world. With that story, I felt Mark understood how many of us feel when we launch a new business after a different phase of our careers.

For me, this book is a game-changer: I'm a mid-divorce, empty-nester, white middle-class British woman with not a clue who she's meant to be - of herself, or in the world of work.
This book doesn't have all the answers, but it sure asks the right questions, and I've found it truly inspirational as I journey on through not knowing to somewhere, somewhen, when I can say that I know where my space is , who my people are, and what I can do for them.
Thanks, @Mark Schaefer.
Not only is it inspiring, largely due to the amazing case studies and detailed research included throughout, it is also insanely practical.
Mark takes a completely different approach in this book than that of your typical personal branding literature, in that this book is a step-by-step, data-backed approach to becoming known and developing your personal brand.
The effort and research that has gone into understanding what it is to be known, as well as the steps required to get there, is phenomenal.
This book starts at the very beginning and takes you through the processes required to go from being someone who is completely unknown, to someone who is known.
The book is chock full of helpful and practical exercises and strategies that will help you understand what you want to be and should be known for, how to find a space in which to be known, and the tools you'll need to get there.
I highly recommend this book to anyone starting out on their journey (or even those currently undertaking one) in the digital world who is wanting to become known as a well-respected thought leader and expert in any given niche.
Because it is FULL of step by step practical advice to help you become KNOWN. Every page inspires, motivates and explains everything in detail. Mark gives case studies to aid understanding....all with one objective in mind, to help you to cut through the noise and clutter out there, to become the authority in your field, to become the trusted adviser. To become KNOWN!
This is not fanciful writing, Mark has researched and interviewed those who have become KNOWN in their field of expertise. He has identified the the characteristics and behaviours......all you have to do is read, create your plan (Buy the Personal Branding Workbook that accompanies this book - do the work and you will have a plan) Then implement!!
Thank you Mark, this is one of the best books I have read in many, many years. Truly inspirational
It's a very practical guide to building a reputation and a following online. It's written in an easy, amusing style, with lots of examples of people who have become known - from Antonio Centeno of Real Men, Real Style to the YouTube star PewDiePie.
Mark Schaefer takes you through all the thinking you'll need to do about your interests and skills and how you might be able to use them to carve out a niche online.
It's very readable, but it took me a while because I kept stopping to consider its lessons. There's a lot there to think about.
‘Known’ is the third book I read by Mark Schaeffer after ‘Born to blog’ and ‘The Tao of Twitter’. Reading one of Mark’s books is like having a conversation with a good friend. A friend who has been wrestling with the same issues, as you, and advises you on the basis of his experiences.
‘Known’ deals with the question how individuals can build their professional brand through social media. The book describes amongst others how to carefully select and define a personal content niche (‘Space’), how to select the right channels and content types (‘Place), how to develop an ‘actionable’ audience and how to elevate on-line to off-line presence.
Like all of Mark’s books, also this one offers a great deal of practical advice, based on the stories and experiences of people who already built a professional brand through social media.
I full-heartedly recommend this book to anyone looking to build his or her professional brand.
