Pros (if not broken):
Awesome Alexa included
SUPER bright lights
It's a smart mirror with a beautiful contemporary design
It's heavier than I anticipated and susceptible to breakage.
Do I recommend a mirror like this? Not at this value at this point in time.
Showed up perfectly intact, which was a relief. I am NOT a fan of buying mirrors and other fragile stuff online, had some bad experience before. When she first opened it, I actually winced a bit, because I was convinced I saw a scratch in the mirror. Turns out it was just a small mark on the protective film they place on the mirror itself, whew. They packed this thing perfectly, so I was confident that it would work fine when unpacked. Installing it in the area of our master bathroom where my Wife wanted it took a bit of doing, had to get an electrician in the family to make sure it was done correctly. You can do it yourself, but all it cost me was a case of beer, so why take chances.
Works beautifully. Great lighting, really is perfect for when she wants to listen to music while doing her makeup. Then I got used to the music feature. Once my Wife walked me through how to get my sports update through it, I was set. Taking a shower, shaving, like Aerosmith I don't wanna miss a thing. I can get quick updates on the weather, so when I'm going through the morning routine, I know to dress accordingly.
Is it pricey? Yep. Is it worth it? I'd say so. Particularly when you can't find products to really compete with what Kohler has done with this one. I guess it's sort of like being in on the ground floor when 4K TVs first dropped. After a few years, you'll start seeing lower prices. But then you'll have this when almost no one else does. And I can't tell you how impressed guests are with it, they're literally seen nothing like it before. Her girlfriends are envious. My buddies could care less about the lighting, but they dig the Alexa integration and waterproof sound system. Go ahead and give it a shot, see if you like it as much as we do.
All that aside, it is a good mirror with high clarity and even lighting. Installation is not too bad, apart from the stress of lifting such an expensive mirror into place. New wiring will likely need to be added, which can be routed from the preexisting light wiring because the mirror does not draw much power.
Having Alexa in the bathroom is very convenient, which explains all the smart mirrors at trade shows like CES. Playing music, getting the time, hearing and setting alarms for hair products, listening to podcasts... they all make getting ready more seamless. A standalone device could do most of the same work, and this mirror has no embedded LCD screen like some of the high concept devices. It is a good compromise in the sense that this is a real consumer product, so the focus is on things that will be genuinely useful. Unfortunately, there can be connectivity issues, which happen with all "smart" devices and breaks the illusion of a gentle future world.
Who is this mirror for? I think someone who like playful steps forward in technology. While practical in some respects, this mirror is more about the experience as a whole. It is hard to say how well it will hold its value compared to a decorative mirror in this price range, but it is certainly more interesting.
