The most recent one we ordered was chewed up in less than a day! His older ones have made it years! What gives?
Kongs are to dogs what Candy Crush is to humans. No, seriously. You pull the Kong out and they get this crazed hyper-focused look on their faces and you know the fun is about to start! Stuff it with treats, peanut butter, cheeze whiz, or literally nothing at all - it doesn't matter, you're dog will go crazy for this toy, particularly if they're a chewer or chaser! They're great for fetch, and (shhh - don't tell my dog) I particularly like pulling ours out when I can see my Boston Terrier Xander wants to play but I'm too busy with housework (or Facebook) to throw the same ball over and over and over.
The magic of the Kong is its irregular shape and its smooth texture. Often times, the combination of sheer excitement and copious amount of slobber cause the Kong to come flying out of your pups mouth, only to bounce every which way, sending Fido into a frenzy as he tries to pin it down and pick it back up. This means a MUCH more challenging game for him and more time for your dishes (or Amazon shopping) all while challenging your dog's natural chase instincts.
A Kong bonanza (so affectionately called in our home) is yet another great use of this toy. Need to crate Fido for the day? Simply stuff the Kong with some treats and peanut butter and FREEZE the night before!! This is an especially helpful trick if you're trying to create a positive association with something too. For instance, my Xander HATED the car when we got him. After giving him his frozen Kong bonanza each and every time we got in the car, he now sees the car as a positive thing.
We own both the small blue puppy Kong and this classic medium Kong and he loves both. At just 5 months old he prefers the puppy Kong when he's in the mood to just chew but LOOOOVES dragging his "big boy Kong" around to play! We tend to use this Kong for the above mentioned Kong bonanzas we give him to create positive associations and to keep him quietly busy for a little while.

A note for dogs who get frustrated with the Kongs at first, many dogs need encouragement to keep going. Even my food motivated little cookie monster needs a personal cheerleader on the home stretch. When she gets really frustrated she'll bring to me to give it a good shake to loosen things up if it's packed too tight. So don't just throw your dog the Kong and then wonder why they're not interested. Start easy with loosely packed food and then get harder. You actually have to put a little effort into training your dog how to use the Kong to get the best results.
I bought 3 of these (large) for my 10 week old Staffweiler puppy who loves to chew and starts bouncing off the walls at 5:30am every morning. Less than 1 day and the 3 Classic Kongs I ordered have already been a lifesaver. She now takes half an hour to eat a meal instead of 30 seconds and she gets so into the meal that she chases the Kong all over the house, so she's running laps while eating her food. She's usually ready for a nap soon after a meal. If she's not, stuff some peanut butter in the Kong to get her going again and then she'll be tired out for sure. Love it!
When looking at sizing options, get at least 1 size larger than you think you need. My pup is a big girl, but at 10 weeks she's still around 20lbs. She loves the large, but gets frustrated with the puppy Kong. I don't recommend much smaller than medium for small dogs. It would be too hard to get the food out. As it is, my pup will probably need XL or XXL by the time she is grown.

L ................13-30 kg .......................Border Collie, Australian Shepherd, Dalmatiner, Viszla

One word of caution however, that I only heard about long after my dog became addicted, is that some dogs' tongues may get stuck inside the toy leading to asphyxiation. That's a truly appalling idea so do supervise your dog with this just in case. Be aware that the little hole in one end may become blocked with food and needs to be washed carefully and regularly. Make sure it remains free and clear thus allowing air to go in and out which should prevent this vacuum tongue-hazard.
My dog had been playing with his first Kong for at least 8 years before it started to break down. The rubber becomes oddly sticky eventually and leaches oils when it begins to perish. Obviously you should replace it as soon as this happens. It's a curious thing but entirely acceptable after years of massive abuse. I started with the Medium size for him and he enjoys it but the Large is a whole new realm because it holds so much more and takes him ages to empty, being much deeper and more challenging.
I would give this five stars based on my own experience. The person who warned me of the danger could be entirely wrong, and was going by hearsay I think, but the fact remains that any design that can become clogged at the end does have the potential to create a vacuum just as a bottle could. Please be careful if you give this to your dog and buy the size that best suits your breed, in terms of safety as well as play quality. I would simply always be there with your dog when you give it to them and supervise them. It remains however a really enjoyable toy for a dog and will keep them happy for ages. Dogs need this mental stimulation which is why I continue to use it even though it requires supervision.
Found out recently they are called kongs after a comment that the prototype looked like one of king kongs ear plugs 😆
Pic shows an adult Field Spaniel (same size head as Setters) with a large size Kong. They should be able to just about get their jaws round the large end to squish out the compacted stuffing for optimum enjoyment, and a peaceful home! 😊
My only regret: the golden retriever that joined our familly 1,5 year ago doesn't fully understand the principle of Kongs and we had to stop giving him any Kongs because the labrador always ended up 'stealing it'.
A last info: Kpngs are tough but they are not everlasting. We have 4 kongs in our freezer so our labrador uses each every four days and they last 3 to 4 months. That said, any toy he doesn't destroy in minutes deserves respect.
We also have black for bigger dogs,
Great toys, great for teething and great for putting in treats to keep them occupied. Can’t fault these at all.
We should own shares in kong today by now the amount we spend but all last well.
Depending on what filling we’ve used it can keep her occupied for an hour or so. But we always supervise her with the kong and take it away as soon as the food is all gone. This is because she starts chewing the kong rather than licking the treat out, and it’s not strong enough to stand up to much chewing.
If you have never used a Kong here's a tip buy some cheap peanut butter smear a small amount inside the kong put a few treats inside (ideally tight fitting) the smellier treats the better and seal with a small dab of peanut butter. Put in front of your dog and watch the delight on their little faces.
They absolutely love these toys and the game of getting out the treats can go on for ages. If you are concerned about your dogs weight just use a little dry food from their bowls.
It seems a lot of money for a bit of rubber but trust me your dog will love you for it ours sit their waiting for our evening coffee time and KONG time.
