UPDATE: Well, just as I thought, after the second treat session the toy was completely destroyed. Not safe. See third picture below....
Contacted KONG directly, no reply.
We have two dogs who love to destroy toys. If we get the squeaky toys, within fifteen minutes the squeaker is ripped out and the toy is usually in at least a couple pieces. If we get "regular" chew toys, they may last a day. That is both messy and it gets expensive.
The KONG bone dog toy is incredibly tough - my dogs have not been able to destroy it, even though they have spent hours chewing on it, fighting over it, and pulling on it. The ends are designed with slots that allow you to shove hard dog treats in there or something soft like peanut butter... perfect for those times when you need your dog to focus on something other than your houseguests for an hour or so. Fill the slots with some soft treat and your dog will settle right down in their kennel and get to work.
I highly recommend the KONG bone dog toy - and so do my dogs.
That being said, not only does she often show interest in this toy, it has held up quite well. We have had this for almost a month now and she has only taken off about 1.5 of the 4 nubs/ends on the bone. Considering I though it'd last maybe an evening, I am quite impressed.
The bone is a fairly flexible rubber-- but despite that, it has held up well. And, as it is not as stiff as some other rubber toys, out dog loves gnawing, chewing and playing with it.
The openings on the end work well to put a bit of peanut butter in and clean out fairly well with hot water. All in all, this has been a good toy so far and its lifespan has exceeded my expectations given my dog's past destruction of (seemingly) similar toys.
There must be a considerable difference between the red rubber of this product and the black rubber of the Kong Extreme, because the medium-sized Extreme usually lasts 2-3 weeks with the same dog. I think the red version is best suited to gentle chewers.
The bone was bigger than I expected, the large size is almost as big as the bones in my forearm (from my wrist to my elbow). Our dogs like it so much that even when the treats are gone (an hour or so later) they keep chewing on it for 3-4 more hours. I just ordered another one, since we have two dogs. That way they will stop fighting over it… and it is cleaning their teeth while they’re spending hours eating a treat that they would normally just inhale in 1 second.
The “Beggin Strips” treats that look like a piece of bacon fit in there with no problem, but are a little bit easy to get out and the dog doesn’t spend as much time figuring out how to get the treat out of the bone. The “Pedigree Mini MarroBones” are better. They are a tight squeeze, but they will fit and it keeps the dog busier for a lot longer time.
The best thing about this toy is that it is made of rubber, so it doesn't leave dents and scratches in my hardwood floor when the dogs play too rough with it.
