My dog has a very strong chew style. I don't leave her unattended with toys because she will tear them apart.
I decided to try the Kong as a way to extend dinner time; Fill it with kibble and put peanut butter on the bottom. She did great licking the peanut butter and getting the kibble. It took 20 minutes. After the food was gone, she gnawed at the top and ripped the toy open in 10 minutes.
The reason for this review to remind everyone to monitor your dogs with toys. People use the Kong to help with separation anxiety and boredom. Before leaving your dog unattended with a toy, make sure that you know that the toy/dog combo is OK.
I'm giving the Kong 4 stars because I know it's a good product, but obviously didn't live up to my needs.
In case anyone is wondering, the one toy that can withstand her chewing is the Goughnuts Maxx. The toys from Goughnuts are pricey, but have a 100% replacement policy. They are made with a inner safety indicator (red means stop) and different strengths of exterior material.
Goughnut Black Maxx Rubber Dog Chew Toy
I like that we can leave him unsupervised with it for short periods of time. As soon as the treats are gone, we will pick it up and put it away otherwise, he will continue to chew it and destroy it. So don't leave it totally unsupervised.
Overall, with the value for the price and duration of this product, we love them. And so does Weston!
I am SOOOOOO SAD that I am going to post this, but I feel like I need to tell the people the truth regarding how long this lasted with my 40 lb coon hound. A total of 1 week. I mean, the red kong we bought at a pet store lasted longer than this did. So disappointed. I have always had such great luck with kong, but within the last week not only did she easily chew off bits & pieces of the EXTREME kong, but her kong bear she has had for a total of 1 month finally has stuffing coming out of it.
We purchased a large load of toys, two of them kong brand (a teddy bear that had rope in it and a tougher fabric mouse with a squeaker) from a local store shortly after adopting our dog. We put majority of them away and give her a new one to add to her collection every week or so. She got the bear and her red kong right away. Took 3 weeks before she started chewing pieces off the red kong; this is where we decided to make this purchase. A few days after the black kong came in, we gave her the more durable mouse. Literally, within an hour, she had shredded it open. Which was really sad. That wasn't a cheap toy. I kid you not, the next day, she started chewing bits off the black "extreme" kong. I was sooooo disappointed. Bahumbug. Then THE VERY NEXT DAY, by some odd coincident, SHE CHEWED A WHOLE THROUGH HER BEAR!!!! What is going on Kong?!!?!?!?!?!?!????!!!! Not only do I feel like I wasted money on this kong that barely lasted, but I have lost all faith in the Kong brand. I have been around some pretty aggressive chewers, and never once have I experienced this. Maybe its just our dog, but I am starting to think something has changed since I last purchased this for an aggressive chewer.....
I have seen the other guys "heavy duty" rubber chew toys and I will never buy anything else but Kong!
