From the Manufacturer

It's not just a dog toy, it's a KONG.

The KONG Classic has been the gold standard of dog toys for over 36 years. Our super-bouncy, red natural rubber compound is unequaled for dogs who like to chew. Stuffing healthy treats into a KONG keeps dogs happily working and out of trouble for long periods of time.

Chewing relieves stress.

KONG Sizing Guide

Separation anxiety

Separation anxiety typically occurs in the first 20 minutes after you leave a dog alone. A simple solution is to help the dog develop a positive association between being left alone and good things, like a treat-stuffed KONG. Stuffing a KONG toy with a mix of wet and dry ingredients creates a challenge that typically lasts 20 minutes, engaging dogs during the time when anxiety is at its peak. A KONG can even be frozen so that getting all the food out takes even more time.

Chewing

For adult dogs, chewing is nature’s way of keeping jaws strong and teeth clean. Chewing also combats boredom and can relieve anxiety or frustration. Without an acceptable outlet for the natural instinct to chew, many dogs will turn to destructive chewing in the home. Success comes when one teaches dogs acceptable chewing behaviors from the very beginning. KONG toys come in a variety of formulas from puppy to adult to senior, so they can grow with your dog. For all dogs—regardless of chewing temperament—supervise play until you’re confident the dog won’t destroy the toy. Be sure to replace any toy with cuts, tears or rips.

Barking and Digging

Dogs bark to communicate and dig when bored or afraid. Creating good behaviors start with productive play, which allows dogs to expend excess energy. Every time you throw a KONG toy, the unpredictable bounce ensures no two games are ever the same, keeping the dog engaged and excited for more. A stuffed KONG is also helpful for a dog left outside to play. Directing their energy toward something positive, like working for the food inside the toy, diminishes bad behaviors.

Crate training

Crate training is an effective way to house train a puppy or new dog. In this critical time, you can help relax your dog with a treat-stuffed KONG to create a positive association with the crate. Start a dog’s crate training by stuffing a KONG toy with a favorite treat. Let the dog see and smell the stuffed toy, then place the KONG in the back of the crate leaving the door open. As the dog chews on the KONG inside the crate, they begin to feel more comfortable and create a positive association with the crate. Repeat this until their dog is happy to settle in the crate on their own.

Give your dog a KONG.

Dogs Need to Play.

For dogs, physical and mental development, emotions and behavior are all influenced by healthy play. Play helps dogs expend excess energy, which is important for appropriate behavior. KONG dog toys encourage play, satisfying dogs' instinctual needs and strengthening the bond between dog and owner.

  • Gentle Chewers – These dogs are easy on toys and prefer plush or fabric toys. They usually like to lick or suck on their toys, but rarely ever destroy their toys.
  • Average Chewers –These dogs love to play with all kinds of toys and will often carry toys around with them. They can be destructive with plush and fabric toys but rarely are destructive with rubber toys.
  • Power Chewers – These dogs are usually strong, determined chewers who require more discretion when it comes to selecting toys. Choose durable, interactive play toys along with hard rubber toys. Sizing up is also helpful when picking toys for Power Chewers.

The invention of the "Kong" is maybe one of my favorites (second to air conditioning) and I know my dog agrees. I have a greyhound who suffered a slight bout of separation anxiety after I adopted him from the track. I needed something to keep him busy and get him excited about my departure to work. The Kong is the answer. I'm sure this sounds weird, but I bought 5 of them - one for each day of the week I have to work. Every Sunday I make a combination of oatmeal, non-fat plain yogurt (good for their tummies) and peanut butter. I heat up the oatmeal and add the yogurt and peanut butter while the oatmeal is hot - it creates a really nice combination of delicious things to fill the Kong with easily. I take the Kong, put some kibbles of his dog food in first, then I pour the mixture of items into a large, durable ziplock baggy and cut a hole in the corner. I squeeze a good amount of the oatmeal, yogurt, and PB into each kong, leaving a bit of space for a milk bone to stick out of the bigger hole on the end of the Kong. I put all 5 in the freezer and give my greyhound one each day. He gets SO excited when he sees a kong come out of the freezer, that he runs full speed into his kennel and waits for me. The Kong keeps him occupied for HOURS and because it's frozen, it lasts even longer and he spends forever licking and biting at the Kong to get the goodies out. Dogs need something to do with their mouths. They use their muzzles like we use our hands. A stuffed Kong can prevent so many behavioral issues like destructive chewing or excessive vocalization from boredom or anxiety. Also, Kongs are without a doubt the most durable toy on the market. They last ages and ages. I recommend them to everybody with a dog.

My 85 lb German Shepherd loves this XL Kong. I learned not to use the Kong brand treats with it though, as they fell out too quickly, and he became bored within minutes. Peanut butter is great but a bit messy. What has worked for me and keeps him busy longer, is breaking large dog biscuits into pieces just slightly larger than the opening, so that they poke out a little, also a few smaller pieces mixed in. (I use Blue brand Health Bars, broken into triangles, they are much bigger than the usual dog treats). He either picks it up and drops it, causing the smaller pieces to fall out, or he has to chew the Kong to get the bigger pieces out. I've had this for 2 months, and it has no tears or breaks, perfectly intact after almost daily strong chewing. Also, great price on Amazon, much cheaper than at the pet store. Overall, a great durable and safe toy.

My German shepherd loves this toy. As both my husband and I work we have to leave her alone for 8 hours a day. I give her a kong filled with treats each morning and often when I get home that she is still working on getting the stuff out. Any toy that keeps this chewing machine occupied for that long is worth its weight in gold!

Our rescue dog, Smokey, a 20lb schnauzer mix was pretty much perfect in every way: obedient, loving, sociable (and I may be biased :), extremely cute. The only thing we weren't expecting: a serious case of separation anxiety. After digging a hole to China in our apartment, howling for hours on end & later having to fork over a few hundred dollars for a trainer, I was feeling really demoralized because we weren't making much progress. Several people had asked if I had tried a stuffed Kong. I had always wondered what the draw was with them (our family dogs never gave them a 2nd glance) so I hadn't even thought about it for Smokey. After reading a few reviews online & checking out blogs on separation anxiety, I purchased the large Kong & figured I'd give it a shot.

A few of the blogs I had read recommended stuffing it with delicious treats like steak or cheese on the bottom, then kibbles & sealing it up with cream cheese or Kong spray & freezing it. I tried this & settled Smokey in his kennel with the door open, gave him the Kong which he went BANANAS for & then made a big production of leaving -- jiggled keys, got my purse, opened the door: nothing. He didn't even look up at me. Mind you, this is the same dog who would cry when I would close the door to go to the bathroom.

After practicing in different rooms, for different lengths of time, I FINALLY felt like there was a light at the end of tunnel. We actually bought extra Kongs so we could always have one ready to go in the freezer. Smokey is so excited for his Kong that when I get it from the freezer, he'll go racing to his kennel & hop right inside waiting for it. We've also made it a fast rule that he only gets the Kong when we leave & can only eat it in his kennel.

I got this in today, gave it to my dog, and an hour and a half later, you can clearly see the result in the picture I posted. All I can say about this dog toy is do NOT give it to a dog that loves to chew! I have a 50 lb. female pit bull. I will try the black ones next. Hopefully those will last longer. I gave it 3 stars because it's probably not a bad toy, it's just that my dog loved to chew on this thing, even without a treat inside!
