It's tough to rate this only 3 stars - because the dog ABSOLUTELY loves it. But the hole in the middle is surely there by design - because without it the ball would last months instead of weeks. Make me a solid version it will get a solid 5 stars.
Max is a 50# "rescue mutt" - he's some sort of giant Beagle crossed with possibly Mastiff or possibly some sort of bull terrier. But he's got a HUGE head, and MASSIVELY powerful jaws. And he LOVES to chew. And chew. And chew. And this ball simply could not stand up to the rigors. And it's not like he would sit and chew for hours - we're talking about the 15 seconds of mashing he would do on the ball between rounds of fetch, and the occasional couple minutes here and there where he would "worry" on it a bit.
To further set the stage - Max pops tennis balls on the first bite. New ball, throw to dog, BANG, no more ball. We thought this was going to be a somewhat long-term answer, but I can't shell out $8 for a ball every other week. Well I could, but I'm also worried about the fact that the dog EATS the pieces.
So don't let the 3 stars convince you not to buy it (lol - like this is going to outweigh the 2,000 5-star reviews from people that gave these to their Schnauzer) rather, think of it an invitation to set your expectations accordingly if you have a powerful dog, and/or one that is an active chewer.
It's tons of fun to play with - as has been mentioned, it definitely has some momentum, so indoors it's going to be doing a lot of collateral damage, especially if you have kids doing the tossing. But holy cow does the dog absolutely love playtime with it. It's the first thing we do in the morning (after food, of course) and the last thing we do before bed.
We will be getting another - but the local "big box pet retailer" sells the 2-pack of these for only a dollar more than this single.
Update: 1/25/12 - Ball survived this long. Still pretty much intact, but she's gotten it to the point where she can get little pieces off. She is obsessed with this ball - it is her constant companion. I will keep a backup onhand as long as they make this ball.
The only downside is that it is really heavy! Don't let your dog drop it on your foot when he brings it back. You'll regret it immediately.
Then I found this gem. IT IS THE ONLY TOY TO SURVIVE ONE YEAR. And it is still going. Other Kong products are solid, they make it a month or two, but this dog toy is King of Durability. As a bonus, it has a little hole in it - It seems perfectly sized to jam a Denta-Stix in there, and various other treats can be jammed in there too, if you are creative and apply unnatural amounts of force. The dog LOVES this. He'll chew on it for up to an hour or so, exercising his piehole AND he seems to be putting in serious doggie concentration using his doggie brain to figure out how to liberate that treat. It's the highlight of his day, second only to when I come home (He acts like he's having 50 birthdays, all at once). If you have a proper brute of a pooch, this is A++.
Follow-up: The "small" size is the same size as a tennis ball, and PERFECT for a chuck-it :D
