I would recommend this toy for kids about 2nd grade and up. My son loves this and is quite good at putting it together. He only asked for my help with understanding the directions for a couple steps the first time he put together each style (You have to build it as a car then take it apart and build it in robot mode). It's nice to see a toy that requires kids to stay focused and see something through to the end. But I think even just a year ago, he might not have been able to really focus on and follow the directions (which have many steps) as well as he does now.
I actually like this better than ACTUAL Transformers as most of the new transformers are plastic, not die cast metal, and break easily. When you knock an arm of a kreo Transformer, it's a lego type piece that is designed to come off and be put back on. We have had so much frustration in this house over transformer pieces breaking off.
The price is also pretty nice. You'll pay a bit more than the really cheap knock-off brands, both because the quality is closer to lego than to those super cheap knock offs and also because it has the Transformer name. But I think you get more for your money than Lego.
Time to assemble: About an hour and forty-five minutes to put the robot mode together, disassemble it, and then put the car mode together.
Now on to the toy: In robot mode Mirage is about as big as a regular Deluxe Transformers toy. Then again, his car mode is so long that it is also as big as a regular Deluxe toy. He looks pretty darn good. I like the color choices in this set. I like the fact that his tires are rubber, but I wish they would actually roll. They also have this tendency to pop off at the least provocation.
No mode uses all the blocks. In robot mode only two pieces remained. I can handle that, I think I could slip them onto the back of his legs for the sake of display. In car mode half of the ball joint pieces aren't used as well as a few other random blocks. I put the random blocks on the bottom of his car mode, but the other pieces are just sort of ... there. I'm still rather disappointed that neither mode uses all the pieces, because I have to store these loose bits when I put on the shelf to display.
I didn't have any problems with the instructions, I thought they were pretty clear and straightforward. The plastic is of pretty good quality and construction. The little people figures though seemed a little cheaper made than their Lego counterparts ... but I do like having the little robots. So cute!Read more ›
CONS: Like all the KRE-O products, the bricks fit slightly less tightly than LEGO bricks. superfluous parts (of which there are several on the humanoid model) fall off very easily. That's forgivable in my opinion, since these models are significantly less pricey than similar-sized LEGO ones. However, the builds themselves often lack very simple and necessary reinforcements. Adding just a few pieces can make the models much more sturdy and play-worthy.
The pieces do not stack well at all. They continually came apart while my children were trying to put additional pieces together. It was very frustrating for them. This particular item has a steering wheel for the car option. The steering wheel does not stay on at all.
They spent over 40 minutes and got through about 10 pages of the instructions. The fact that the pieces kept coming apart prolonged the construction process.
I will return all of the products I purchased.
