Pro's- Small and compact. Easy to keep on a work vehicle for ready use.
- Love the on board storage for the bit and retaining pin. Wish there was a place for the allen wrench like the euro hinge jig has.
- Drills a decently clean hole without much tear out of the veneer. NOTE- my old method was to lay everything out, use a small nail set and
punch a small hole in the plywood to prevent the drill bit from drifting. Then use a 1/4 inch drillbit in reverse to break the veneer of the
plywood without any tear out, then drill normally with another 1/4 inch bit with a stop collar for the actual hole. If I did not do it that way the ply wood would have alot of tear out. The veneer these days is just too thin. Way to much work!
-I have used their pocket screw jigs for years and feel comfortable the steel inserts will hold up with time.
- It stayed true using only the guide pin to continually move the jig further up the 7 foot tall panels of a tall book case.(Also see negatives)
Negatives- I hate the 1 inch set back side of this. It does not allow for my usual 3/4 inch shelf edge with beaded edges to fit behind the
face frame. It only allows for a maximum of about 1/2" after the shelf pin itself is installed. It also is so close to the edge of the
plywood that fasteners used to fasten the backing can protrude into the hole. This did happen so now I align the fasteners
in a way that they do not match where the holes are, but it is a pain in the az.
- The jig also has a very slight offset when you flip it to drill between the front and back of the piece you are working on.
It is hard to see with a tape measure but I do have a very slight wobble in shelves with the front right always dipping down.
Sometimes it can be from the plywood not being flat, but it is consistent enough in that direction to say that the jig has
a slight offset from one side to the other.
Overall I will be using this for now, it is better then my old method. I do need to work on a fix for the !" set back though.
Also, drilling a little slower and paying attention to staying perpendicular to the work piece helps with tear out issues.
-I have also noted a slight but notable offset of the holes. The jig does a good job of
I just completed a 6-section set of builtin bookcases for our family room. The cases are 8' high and the overall width is 15'. There are over 1500 shelf pin holes in the vertical sides to provide lots of flexibility of shelf spacing. For production efficiency, I machined all of the parts first, then did the assembly and installation. I originally drilled the holes using a Bench Dog shelf drilling jig, not this Kreg. The Bench Dog worked OK initially, but after completing all of the holes, I discovered that the spacing was imprecise because the spacing holes in the plastic Bench Dog jig elongated while I drilled the 1500 holes. It wasn't very visible on the jig, but it was enough to make the lower shelves wobbly. The problem with the Bench Dog design is that the collar on the drill bit rubs against the plastic holes with enough friction to melt the hole and allow it to expand. Note, it wasn't the flutes of the drill bit that made the holes larger, it was friction from the collar.
I was able to shim some of the shelves on their pins to stop the wobble, but I bought the Kreg jig to remanufacture the final section. It works great. I specifically chose the Kreg because it has metal bushings in each guide hole that contact the spinning drill bit and this keeps the Kreg jig accurate. It was only slightly more expensive than the Bench Dog and the Kreg was the only shelf jig I could find with metal bushings. All the rest I found were plastic, and usually more expensive than the Kreg.
Highly recommended.
Used it on a pantry I built and before long I had all my holes drilled, all in the right spots. I like how it works either against a piece or on the edge of.
So simple to use. Set the stop collar on the drill bit, there is a gauge on the back of this jig to maker it easy. Put it where you want to put the holes and drill. Need more, just insert the index pin and move the jig to the next set. You could drill holes forever.
Even though it's plastic, it seems to be very tough plastic. And with the metal insets for drilling the holes, this one is sure to last longer than me. It even comes with a connector to you can connector more than one jig.
I also like how everything stores under the jig, well almost everything. There is a place to hole the drill bit and indexing pin. Only thing I could not find a spot for is the Allen key to tighten the stop collar on the drill bit. Did they forget? Not a biggie.
Only thing I noticed, I did not get the cleanest holes. Don't know if it's the bit or the plywood, or both. Course that will be covered with the pins and shelves anyways.
Sure you could make your own shelf pin hole jig, but why, for this price it's hardly worth your time making something from scratch.
Very happy with my purchase, would buy again.

Using the jig is quite straightforward. I found that I needed to go back over the holes a second time with the drill bit (in18mm ply) to clean up the holes. The pins were very tight as there was some tear out from the initial cut.
The accuracy of the jig and holes was good enough for my shelving units. If you were making kitchen cabinets, you'd need to spend more time taking a reference to ensure all holes were aligned.
While you can store the drill bits and guides within jig, the connector piece, screws, and allen key cannot be stored. This might be an annoyance for some as those parts could be easy to lose.
Overall another good product from Kreg.
IMPORTANT: The 5mm version is here everything is identical but you won't need to buy a new drill bit when you realise you've got the 1/4" version! 90% of people looking at this will want the 5mm version, that said there's really very little else to complain about, it's a great product and I don't regret buying it for a second.
