There is no difference in the performance of these screw VS the stainless version with respect to wood splitting. Overall very happy with this product.
The screws have a coating that is supposed to prevent corrosion. Most of the screws showed some areas of metal where the coating was either scratched off or just missing. And after driving the screws into the deck boards, you could clearly see where the coating has been removed by the driver bit. My worry is that in a few years or sooner, the screws will be rusting at the heads.
Another issues is that you have to use a KREG Deck Jig to Predrill the screw holes. This is very tedious and time consuming. On a recent deck installation, I had to predrill over 1000 screw holes. I knew this would be required when I bought the KREG Deck Jig and Deck screws but hadn't clearly thought about how much more work that was going to be.
You also are supposed to use the KREG Deck Jig to install the KREG deck screws. I didn't because for awhile I had someone else installing the KREG deck screws while I drilled the screw holes. I should have realized that I needed two KREG Deck Jigs. I guess the people at KREG never figured that two people might be working together on installing a deck. The problem now is that I have to worry that I installed the KREG Deck screws too deeply and the installation book says that will be a problem because water will sit in the hole and might create a problem. Sure, I should have read the manual and should have used the KREG Deck Jig for the deck screws but never having had to use a jig for installing deck screws before, I never figured you'd need a jig for these. I think it should state in bold lettering on the screw boxes "MUST USE DECK JIG".Read more ›
