This book was originally pubished in Germany in 1929. The original author was Ludwig Renn. What I am publishing is my translation of Renn's work. The book tells the story of a young German soldier, who walked into combat at the beginning of World War I and walked back to Germany when the war ended. I signed a contract with American Book Publishing and the translation was published in 2009. My connection with them was not advantageous for either of us. The book is now out of print and I am under no obligation to American Book Publishing. I am the sole owner of the translation copyright.

This is a first-hand account, written in novel form, of a German infantry officer's personal experiences during the Great War. As such, it invites comparison to two other narratives from that war, Remarque's "All Quiet on the Western Front," and Junger's, "Storm of Steel." "Krieg" is definitely the lesser known of this trio. It is perhaps not as well-written as"All Quiet on the Western Front," but its narrative is no less compelling, and it has all of the raw violence of "Storm of Steel." It was written and published in Germany during the tumultuous years between World War One and the ascendance of the Nazi regime, when the term, "stormtrooper" took on a different meaning than it had during the war, and many veterans were incorporated into the Freikorps. As such, it has a bit less of the anti-war tone of Remarque's novel.

Das Buch beschreibt in Romanform die Kriegsereignisse an der Westfront von 1914-1918 aus deutscher Sicht. Die Schilderungen der Kampfhandlungen sind intensiv und wohl realistisch (ich war ja selber nicht dabei). Nach der Lektüre von Edlef Köppens "Heeresbericht" und Ernst Jüngers "In Stahlgewittern" kann ich für den WK1 Interessierten alle drei Bücher empfehlen. Allerdings fiel es mir in "Krieg" doch schwerer, die verschiedenen Charaktere richtig einzuordnen. Ich fand "Krieg" in diesem Punkt sprunghafter als die beiden anderen Bücher.
