This little Krups did manage to pulverize the cinnamon and cardamom I needed to grind.
It’s small. Light. Easy to use.
Cleaning is never the easiest with these things. The cap comes off so that’s super easy. But just have to be careful with the base since you can’t get it wet — lots of powerful electrics going on here. Par for the course.
One slight negative. I did get that unpleasant “burning” smell when grinding for over a couple minutes straight. A friction burn smell from the electric motor I guess? Had me worried a bit. But no surfaces were hot to the touch. And I dialed it down a bit to be cautious. Cinnamon sticks are tough and require a lot of grinding! Still. It got the job done!
So it was time to replace the grinder. I'm glad I did because this new one is quieter and even stronger.
It's great!
The Oxford English Dictionary says “phony” (it uses the British spelling “phoney”) is “probably a variant of fawney,” an old slang term for a finger ring. The OED says “fawney” comes from fáine, Irish for ring.
How, you’re probably wondering, could the Irish word for a ring be the ultimate source of “phony”?
The missing link here is an old confidence game known by such terms as “fawney dropping,” “going on the fawney,” or the “fawney rig.” (A “rig” was a trick or swindle.)
I bought this particular Krups coffee grinder mainly because my mom has one that is coming up on 20 years old. As the saying goes, "they just don't make em like they used to." Or do they? The answer is YES. Side by side comparison of the 20 year old white Krups, and my brand new black Krups revealed almost no difference. They are identical. You know what that means to me? It means the company knows they make a great product that lasts for years, so why change it? All I can say is I wish Krups made cars.
So, about the grinder... It is very simple and straightforward. A powerful machine with one purpose: to pulverize anything you put in it. I mainly use mine for coffee, but I also use it for spices occasionally. Normally I hand grind all my spices in a mortar and pestle. I have even used it to grind my home grown dry chili peppers to put in a shaker. It works beautifully! The only problem with that is cleaning, but its not fair to fault the machine for that. After all, it was meant for coffee beans. It does take a bit of work to clean it without damaging it. You can't exactly put it in the dishwasher. I used a dry toothbrush and toothpicks to pick out all the spicy mess. I assume I got it all out since I don't taste any chili pepper in my coffee. Heck, for 20 bucks, its worth buying a second one just for spices!
This is a great grinder! It is well built and very powerful! There is no doubt in my mind that this one will last 20+ years just like my moms!
UPDATE 2/2016! It's been about 4 years and this grinder is still going strong! I use it about 2 to 3 times daily. I haven't had one single problem with it, and I have not had to perform any sort of maintenance except for the occasional cleaning. I have noticed a few gripes from other reviewers that I would like to address:
1. Hard to pour the coffee into the coffee maker from the grinder. Really? Come on. Grind your coffee, turn the thing upside down with the lid on, give it a few taps, and pull the lid off in the upside down position. Now you have a nice little container of ground coffee to pour it into your machine. It's not brain surgery... you can do this. Give it a try!
2. Oval shape hinders the circular flow of beans while grinding. I have found this only matters when you overload the grinder. Keep it to level with the top and you're golden. If you're like me and insist on filling the thing with a huge heap, then do this: I solved this by pulsing the power button 5 or 6 times. While doing that, you can watch the grounds circulate top to bottom, not round and round. Either way, your beans still get pulverized, so who cares?
3. Comparing this unit to a high dollar burr grinder. NO! STOP IT! This is a $20 blender type (for lack of a better term) It's not a barrista's wet dream $300 burr grinder. It's just not, no matter how much you want it to be. If that's what you were expecting when you dropped a whole Jackson on this one, you must enjoy disappointment. It's like comparing apples to.. hmm... applesauce.. yeah, applesauce. Lets go with that.
4. Too loud. I saw one reviewer that described this unit as "deafeningly loud" which I had to chuckle at. Granted, it's not exactly quiet, but it's not "deafening" in any sense of the word. If you're one of those spastic drama queens who overly exaggerates everything, this one is not for you. The grinder is basically a drill motor with a tiny lawn mower blade on it. It's gonna make some noise. I'd say it's comparable to a hair dryer on low. I am rather biased on the noise level though. I work in a steel mill, so to me the noise level is no big deal. Take that for whatever it's worth to ya, but it's hardly deafening or I would most certainly be stone deaf by now.
I will update again sometime in the future! ta ta!
10 YEAR UPDATE!!! I have nothing to complain about.. literally nothing! This grinder still works just as good as the day it was new! Considering at least a pot a day sometimes more, we are talking over 3,650 uses. That also makes my moms grinder I mentioned 30 years old and hers is also still going strong. I challenge you to show me any product that lasts 10 years without a single problem. Some may say "Its not the years, its the mileage." which is true to an extent... however, I am not nice to this grinder.. Its not a once-in-a-while thing. Its had daily use since day one. We've been through a lot together and she's got a lottta rough miles on 'er... but the most important thing is she's still here and just won't give up.

Very handy push start/stop button, helps vary the coffee grind level to your liking
Cleaning & transferring the coffee powder is a bit messy but that's ok
I first purchased a James Martin by Whal mini grinder as it was advertised as being suitable for coffee beans, dry spices and nuts. It turned out to be almost useless for grinding dry spices, despite many various attempts with different seeds the result was always a very disappointing combined gritty and dusty mixture. I found the machine awkward to use and the plastic 'viewing' window at the top of the lid nothing more than a tiny peep hole. My next choice was the Krups Coffee mill as I noticed on the Krups website, under specifications, it is stated for use with dry spices.
~ Description ~
I really liked the straightforward oval cylinder shape of this mill with its black plastic shiny finish and slanted clear plastic lid with a black rectangular switch at the side. The unit stands 17cm high and is approximately 10cm wide. The very robust clear plastic lid lifts off and locates back onto the grinder base smoothly and securely. Inside is a stainless steel lined grinding chamber and a sturdy 6cm stainless steel double blade. The overall feel is of a quality product designed to do its task rather than an emphasis on looking flashy or fashionable in the kitchen. 'Krups' is written in grey on the front at the base and directly behind this at the back is where the 70cm cable is connected. The mill runs at 180 watts.
~ Whole spices ~
Whole spices are of course dried seeds. I had read somewhere that many spices can lose a certain amount of flavour as well as nutritional or medicinal properties if stored in a ground form for long periods of time. Until this point I had usually bought spices ready ground. I experimented with dried dill and coriander seeds collected from our vegetable garden and ground a few with my pestle and mortar, then used within a few days either in baking or cooking. I was so impressed by the richer and fresher flavours of these spices, I've since then bought most of the spices I like to use in whole form or made sure I have plenty of seed produced in the garden to dry and then store in airtight jars.
~ Use and Efficiency ~
I have been using the Krups mill for nearly a year and am thoroughly impressed with its performance in terms of finely grinding the dried seeds of dill, fennel, cardamom, coriander, cumin, cloves and caraway. Also peppercorns, mustard seeds, cinnamon sticks (broken into pieces), dried thyme and sea salt. I usually place a heaped tablespoon of seeds into the mill, slide the lid into position and then simply press down on the black switch, the grinder will not operate unless the lid is located fully, a good safety feature. With a combination of pressing the switch down for two and four second periods the spices are quickly ground to either an evenly coarse or a very fine texture depending on which you require. The motor after over 11 months of fairly regular use still sounds as strong and powerful as it did when new.
~ Cleaning and storage ~
I use a little wooden spoon to remove the ground spices out of the mill so as not to get the mill scratched. The lid can be washed with warm soapy water and the grinding chamber carefully wiped clean with a damp cloth. At times it can be a little tricky to clean around and under the blade but this I would imagine is no different to other similar grinders. I have found it easier to clean than the Whal grinder, this is due to the oval shape which allows easier access with a cloth. The plastic lid has lost its transparency and become slightly opaque over the months of use and this does seem to be the case when spices are ground, an effect on the plastic from the oil vapours in the spices I would guess. This however I don't mind at all as the whole lid still provides an adequate view of the spices whilst grinding.
The 70cm cable is in my opinion a sensible length for use on a kitchen surface, too much cable could be a nuisance whilst using the grinder and also cumbersome to store away. I tend to wind the cable around the base of the grinder but find due to the shiny plastic base, the cable slips and I need two hands to hold the base, cable and plug altogether as I put it away in a cupboard. A clip for the plug to attach to the cable would make this much easier, especially for those of us without large hands (my husband can deftly hold it all in one hand).
~ Conclusion ~
An efficient, well designed grinder for use with spices. I feel confident that after nearly a year of use this grinder will continue to perform well for a long time yet
