I would like to recommend a trick in removing the shells: So that the shells come off evenly and easily, as soon as the eggs are done cooking, I place them into a deep bowl of cool water and let them soak in there, until they cool down and I have the time to remove the shells. When the eggs are left to "dry out", it makes them more difficult to remove the shells. FRESH eggs also will make a difference. After I remove the shells, I place them in an airtight GLASS container and refrigerate. Then they are ready to be eaten without dealing with a mess.
I would like to also make a suggestion to prolong the life of the Teflon base. Over many uses, it will burn and discolor, eventually smelling like something is burning every time you use it...I learned this the hard way....we use ours 2-3 times per week. So, I discovered a product to wipe the Teflon area after each use. (Pictured below and available at Bed, Bath and Beyond OR on Amazon.) It was designed to be used on Cast Iron to condition & prevent rusting, but I have found other uses for it, such as conditioning my Egg Cooker base. Just be careful to keep it on the Teflon ONLY. I simply dry the base with a paper towel after each use and squirt a pea-sized drop of the Camp Chef Cast Iron Care Cream on the Teflon and then wipe it evenly with the same paper towel and put it away. Looks BRAND NEW after doing this. The conditioner consists of various oils, including Palm, Coconut and Sunflower oil. So there is nothing in it that is harmful or corrosive.
Happy egg cooking!
This egg cooker does a few things. First and foremost it makes boiled eggs. I've tried them all three ways and they come out perfect each way. The measuring cups a little hard to see but works well. It's a little bizarre that it takes more water to cook less eggs and vice versa. It works though.
I recently used the poaching dishes. They are really more like over easy. They slide out of the poaching dishes easily and are quick and easy to cook. The drawback is that they aren't really poached. More like over easy. (See the picture). This is minor and I am more of a poached egg purist so I will poach my eggs in water if that's what I want. This works great for what it is though. I have also put scrambled eggs in here and they come out a little strange looking but good.
All in all this is a great appliance and will be used until it wears it. I really will never again boil water to cook eggs. One last note. The buzzer is very loud on this. It works very well. Just be aware that it is supposed to be this way.
I also learned something from another reviewer... that what I always considered the top of the egg (the more pointy end) is actually the bottom (Hint: pierce the top, not the bottom). In addition, I've found as well that not all eggs you find in the supermarket are equal, and that can make a difference in the end result.
I find in my area (Western New England) that the major store brand eggs tend to be less consistent in the cooking process than some of the slightly more expensive name brands. I'm not entirely sure why that is but I suspect that it's due to the large volume of eggs delivered to the supermarkets labeled as "store brand" versus the lesser quantity of the other name brands may be affecting the freshness.
Your mileage may vary but I really enjoy this cooker.
