When the old one failed, we looked to upgrade, and this much more expensive Krups maker looked like just the ticket. Right out of the box, it appeared much more durable and attractive, although quite complicated. The unit failed two days past the Amazon return date, and I called Krups customer service. Since it's under warranty, they're sending me a shipping label (I'm assuming it's prepaid) to one of their service centers. Expected turn-around is four weeks or more. This is unacceptable, and I'm not dealing with Krups again!
[update] Well, I have to eat my words, as I just got off the phone with Krups--I guess you could say I'm dealing with them again--as the electronics have once more failed. Last time, the machine gave a "low water" indication even though the reservoir was full. This time, I get a flashing alternate message "ON" and "00000" and no water heating. The very nice customer service person told me that there is no exception to their "no replacement" policy, and that I'd again have to wait four-to-six weeks for a repair/replace turnaround from a distant appliance repair depot. I'm now working through the reviews of competitors products for a replacement
1) Does it taste good when brewed?
YES, Yes it most certainly does.
2) Does it keep my coffee warm without burning?
Indeed it does! Once the coffee is brewed it shuts itself off and stays warm and drinkable for AT LEAST 90 minutes after that, or longer...(I like my coffee HOT and I have never ever had an issue or had to reheat)
3) Easy to use?
Maybe I'm NOT an idiot, but I have never, ever, had a problem with this machine, the worst offense is perhaps I have dribbled some water while filling it up, but I do that with most things...The air bubble issue is so minor and I don't use it to gauge how much coffee I make anyway, so I actually have not really noticed that issue. It is so minor I am shocked people would even mention it as a reason to dislike this product...But hey, to each his own. Just use the carafe to fill and the inner chamber as a guide if you really don't know how much water you are putting in.
We have this one at work, and I'm in the market for a new one at home (we have a Gevalia "freebie" one that was good for a while, but it has started to burn the coffee which I hate...Before that we had an AWFUL Cuisinart Thermal carafe one that literally made lukewarm coffee) so I am going to purchase one for my home as well.
I have not ever dealt with Krups custome service, but my opinion on customer service, is you get what you put out. If you call up in a mood and are nasty to these poor people on the other end of the line, well they might not be so nice back...I always give Customer service people the benefit of the doubt, cause really, it must not be so fun to listen to people complain all day! And if someone is being rude, ask to speak to a supervisor... As my mother always said, kill em with kindness...usually works for me.
Consensus: Makes great tasting coffee and keeps it hot. Other reviewers issues are minor at best...
And, yes, the last cup out is a bit clumsy - you have to hold the carafe at an extreme angle and drain all the coffee through the spout AND over the little plastic "gate", but if poured with reasonably steady hands I don't spill any and get it all out.
On the positive side, it makes great coffee. I'm fairly picky, and don't have any complaints with the aroma or taste using my favorite coffee (Mrs. Garland's blend from Flying Goat Coffee - try it..). The stainless steel carafe, cover, and swing door are easy to keep clean even in my high-mineral water area.
I would buy another, but I would also check and see if the same features could be found in a better-pouring carafe. Short of that, when this one gives it up I'll be back for another.
After five years my unit started leaking about 1/3 cup of water (not coffee, so not from the filter basket / carafe). Two days ago I had started a full pot without checking the carafe for leftover, and (doh) it ran over. I'm not sure if that event caused the leak (I've done that before on one or two occasions).
Regardless, looking at the current offerings I've ordered another, for various reasons:
a) It worked quite well for five years, so amortized that's not a bad cost
b) I can use the old carafe as a second or as a backup
c) Any issues with the first (as listed above - bubbles, pouring, filling) are minor and don't bother me
I use the product that was included with the original - "Better Brew" to keep it clean when the "CALC" warning comes on (we have very hard water). http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000PBUKCC/?tag=googhydr-20&hvadid=13013024875&ref=pd_sl_2dtm8qcg6x_b
I also like the "duo filter" feature of this unit. The filters are inexpensive, easy to change, and about twice a year I've replaced them.
