Inspired by professionals and designed for connoisseurs, KRUPS products have been built with three key attributes in mind: Passion, Precision and Perfection. To optimize the taste of your coffee and the lifetime of your appliance, we recommend that you use the KRUPS F088 Water Filtration Cartridge. It consists of an anti-scale substance and active carbon which reduces the chlorine, impurities, lead, copper and pesticides in the water. The minerals and trace elements in the water, however, are preserved. The KRUPS F088 Water Filtration Cartridge is to be used with KRUPS Precise Tamp espresso machines and fully automatic machines. We recommend you change the filter at least every two months.

Installation is simple, just screw the filter on the water tank. The numbers on top of the filter serve as a reminder to change the filter (you manually set the month). When using the machine for the first time, it's important to use the steam/stop function 2 to 3 times, so the filter fills with water, or else no watter will pour from the machine.
How to use the steam/stop function: put the lever in the steam position, wait for the light to stop blinking, put the lever back in the stop position. This will make the machine force the water into the filter.
Consideration: due to the extra work needed to make an espresso, I don't know if I should recommend this accessory. I'm not sure whether or not there is a real improvement on coffee flavor as I'm using a different coffee blend that I'm used to use. It seems to me there isn't, and I might probably stop using it.
PS: This is a follow up, on my original review from Jan, 7th, 2015:
The problem I was experiencing seems not to be related to the filter. It seems it may be a problem with the water pump after all. So what I told earlier about water pouring slowly, may not apply to your case. It was a coincidence that this happened precisely when I changed the coffee holder and put the water filter.
