The whole concept of the water boiling and then pushing up the sides to steam down into the grounds makes you a POT of espresso-like coffee. Such flavor intensity! Except for using an Aeropress when I am away from home, EVERY cup of coffee I have had in the past 11 years has been made with the Moka Brew. I either gave my relatives a brewer and use theirs or I bring my brewer with me to friends and relatives that don't have one.
Keywords: robust, flavorful, eye-opening, revealing, enlightening, satisfying.
Important instructions to ensure a good result:
Always fill the boiler with the maximum volume of water marked on the carafe, and add 8 scoops of grounds to the filter using the included scoop. Or, if you are disinclined to measure, fill the boiler to the brim with water, and fill the filter almost to the brim with grounds. Level the grounds by tapping gently with the bottom of the scoop. After brewing is complete, and before pouring, stir the carafe.
It sounds simple, and it is, because the design of this maker compels you to make a great pot of coffee. The underlying reasons have to do with water temperature, pressure, and time spent by the water traversing the grounds. But the great thing is, you don't have to know any of that.
In a previous life, I had a home espresso machine. After pulling a shot, the coffee grounds left ( the puck ) would be mostly dry. When finished, this maker leaves the grounds in the filter in almost the same condition.
Before pouring the first cup, stir the carafe to ensure a consistent result, because the brewing process produces a stratified liquid that is stronger at the bottom, weaker nearer the top.
I have found that it takes about 12 minutes to complete a brew, once you turn on the only switch on the maker. Once brewing is complete, the maker will turn itself off after a few minutes. Brewing itself is very quiet and unnoticeable beyond a few feet. This maker does not have a warming plate. Serve within a few minutes, or transfer to an insulated container. A full carafe will serve a little more than about 3 12oz cups.
I am using store bought drip grind coffee. Using only the permanent filter, there is some very fine sediment. Personally, I do not mind it. Using an additional paper filter may prevent this. If the result from brewing is too strong, add water to taste.
Addressing some critical reviewers:
Stir the carafe before pouring your first cup.
Do not attempt to pour from the carafe whilst the filter is sitting on it.
There are only 3 steps to make a great pot of coffee: fill with water, fill with grounds, turn it on. Oh, I lied, there is a fourth step: stir when done.
This maker does not have a warming plate.
A full carafe is about 40oz.
If you find the coffee produced using this maker is no better than a 'regular' maker, then you are doing it wrong (see instructions) or the other maker is also this maker.
