What sold me on this one? It was the front facing water level window, the included reusable filter, and most of all the dual auto brew setting ability. The programable keep warm function for both heat and time was a bonus. I love the reusable filter and have not noticed the sediment in the bottom of the pot from using the reusable filter that other reviewers noted. This could be the grind of the coffee I use. The filter is very heavy duty compared to the flimsy one that came with my old coffee maker. The programable functions did not disappoint. They are very easy to set. The turning knob is far superior to pushing buttons a hundred times to get to the correct time.
What worried me? Wondering if it was too big and if the carafe lid was removable. The size turned out to be just right (see pic). But I am disappointed that the carafe lid does not come off easily. I mean, you CAN take it off, but it requires a bit of effort. It is not designed to be removed daily and requires prying it off with a butter knife.
What I wish I knew? Well beside the carafe lid not being removable... This thing beeps. A lot. Beeps when you set it, beeps when you cancel a setting, beeps when the brew cycle is done. And when it is in keep warm mode, the display shows a countdown of the time left for keep warm and not the clock. These things both bothered me at first, but really turned out to be not a big deal in real life.
But how's the coffee? Freaking wonderful! Delicious! The temperature is just right! I honestly didn't think it mattered which coffee maker you used, coffee is coffee. We drink our coffee black, so I thought a little bitterness was just a fact of life. I was wrong! The coffee from this machine tastes great, not a hint of that bitterness, even on the bold setting.
This review isn't long enough, what else do you have to say? As with every other coffee maker I've ever used, when sneaking a cup, a drip will fall on the burner. The difference between this and my old maker is that the Krups drips just one drop and my old one dripped about seven drops. That being said, I have experienced zero drips from the carafe when pouring. Not a single one when filling the tank, nor when pouring a cup of coffee. Unlike my old machine, I do not have to keep a towel on the counter to catch the flow of water from the carafe when filling the tank.
Bottom line? This is a great machine with great features at a great price and I am very happy with my purchase. Definitely recommend.
I bought an upscale Mr. Coffee and sold my Food Network to my neighbor. Less than a year later, the Mr. Coffee was making lousy coffee, and I had quit using the stupid charcoal filter in the top since it seemed to focus the water on one spot on the grounds. I also think having the charcoal filter downstream of the heating coils allowed them to scale up a lot faster. Dumb design.
I moved on to a Hamilton Beach, with the removable water reservoir, only to have it leak after six months. I bought a Farberware, still clinging to the flat bottom grind holder, and suffered through six months of bad coffee before finally taking a hard, long look again at cone style coffee makers.
This unit has all the good things that my old Food Network unit had, and much more. Plus, it makes a GREAT cup of coffee, in regular setting, using two heaping small scoops of my blend. That is about half of what the instructions say I would need, and about one-third less than I was using in the flat bottom units I owned.
I did find that the instructions are a bit archaic, with the picture tutorial, and Krups assigning a letter designation to each item on the maker, then referring to only the letter in the instructions. Making it more difficult, the instructions fold oddly, making you flip back and forth to realize what letter item you are talking about. But this is a bit of nit-picking.
Once you get the basics down, and your timing options down, this thing makes a doggone good cup of coffee, and does it pretty fast to boot.
Things I really like:
The button inset into the warmer plate has to be depressed by the carafe to allow the coffee to flow during brewing. Nice feature.
The warming plate time is easily changed, and the unit remembers it pot after pot, unless the power goes out, then it reverts to the two hour default.
Regular is regular, and Bold is BOLD. (When you need bold, it's there!)
The area behind the cone shaped grind holder to pour the water is fairly generous, and it is easy to get the water in.
The charcoal filter, should you use it, it where it should be, at the entrance to the heater element chamber, not after, like the Mr. Coffee. Should help with keeping the scaling down.
Despite people complaining about the steam coming out of the top, I like it. I sometimes put a plate with my pastry on top to keep it warm. and the aroma is wonderful..
What I don't like:
The controls are partially stacked, some having multiple functions, some not. It is a fairly complex unit with a lot of options. There is a learning curve. It's more than just pressing that big button in the middle that says "BREW".
It is possible to dribble with the carafe. Although I have had pretty good luck with the carafes that have the molded glass lip in the carafe, this one can dribble if you pour a bit too fast, or have it slightly tilted off axis and the coffee hits the lid on the way out. Mostly on putting the water in and getting started is where I find I push it a bit and it dribbles.
About once every two weeks, for some reason, the sprayed water going into the cone grind holder seems to drag my paper filters down and fold it over. Once, coffee grinds fell out. I use paper filters, not the goldtone unit becaue I don't like that bit of fine grind in the bottom of my carafe. I think since I grind my own I have fines in my grind. The goldtone does not stop these. So if you use paper for better filtering, beware that this unit can wash the sides down if not put in carefully and dead on aligned.
Overall, this is a great coffee maker and I feel like I finally came home again after three coffee makers from big manufacturers, all of which fell short. Thanks, Krups!
