I gave this three stars because it makes really good coffee, and keeps it hot for a long time, which is ultimately the point. I have used this coffee maker for a couple of weeks now, and still do not like the way it is made.
I judge a coffee maker by:
1.Ease of Use and Maintenance
2. Brew temperature in the Ideal range of 185-205F
>This unit comes with a short and long cord so you choose which length suits your area.
>It has a Regular and Bold brew cycle. Bold slows the cycle time for a stronger brew.
>It holds a maximum of 12 6 oz cups.
>A “Cleaning” light goes on to tell you to run it through the “Clean” cycle for descaling. Scaling causes the unit to flow poorly, the filter holder to overflow, stoppage during cycling or the coffee to taste bad.
>A DuoFIlter cartridge that uses “active plant ingredients” filters water and extends the times between needed “Cleaning” cycles. An indicator tells you know when the duo filter needs replacement. Krups Coffee Maker will still work without a replacement DuoFIlter.
>A lever at the top of the handle is depressed to pour.
Krups recommends heating the carafe before use. I like to program it for the morning so I don’t preheat with warm tap water before brewing. My insta-read thermometer gave the following degree readings:
Brewed Pot: 189 degrees F
4 hrs later: 172F
It's a big deal that Krups makes coffee at the right temperature. Too many coffee makes don't heat hot enough for a proper brew.
What’s in the box?
Measuring spoon for grounds [I don't use. I just use the same amount of coffee I usually use for the same number of cups.]
Filter cartridge and holder
>The Zojirushi coffee maker costs $188. The Krups ET351 $85. Using the same premium whole beans that I grind myself in a burr grinder, I can say I cannot tell the difference in brew quality. As impatient as I am, I brew on Bold for deeper taste.
So far, this appears to be a fine coffee maker machine for the price. The coffee made in the Krups is indistinguishable from that made in the Zojirushi.
Cons (Call me picky):
> Boxy styling is not so pretty.
> Ease and Maintenance is a little more complicated than other manufacturers. This is probably because it is good habit to do for all machines but Krups spells it out. For example, Krups says to remove the filter before pouring the grounds in the filter. Instructions warn that loose grounds that may end up in the water reservoir can clog up the line and cause the machine to stop working properly. This I am sure is true for all coffee machines but who wants to be reminded.
> Water line is hard to read. It's on the right corner of the machine behind opaque plastic. No colored bubble to help see the level.
> Harder to move in and out from under counter. This should be used as a stationary machine.
> No clock battery backup to remember time and auto set function.
> Harder to pour that the last cup out of the carafe. Doesn't spill; it's just harder to pour tilting it over.
In short, the Krups ET351 is a fine coffee maker for the price. It brews in the ideal range and holds temperature pretty well. It's taste is indistinguishable when using the same quality and amount that one is use to using.
If you need to replace your coffee maker, this can be a pretty good choice without breaking the bank.
Update: After some observation, I noticed the lid indeed was the culprit. The underside of the lid has 3 openings with circular gaskets. I removed the smallest gasket which now allows the pot to vent as the coffee is brewed. This has resolved the overflow issue, without compromising the heat retention! The unit honestly makes a great pot of coffee, but the lid needs to be re-engineered. I also suggest better quality control by the manufacturer.
