Within 6 months the dispenser mechanism started making a whining noise occasionally until it finally quit after just over a year.
Customer service from Krups was outright rude at the start of the replacement process which took over 1 month, starting with sending the coffee maker to a service center. Once it was determined that the maker was not repairable, we had to choose from a limited inventory of dissimilar products. It took a month for the replacement to be delivered, and only arrived after 5-6 phone calls inquiring about where the thing was.
And finally, the replacement Krups coffee maker, which because this model is discontinued, has a glass carafe and it sucks.
So, in summary, you don't always get what you pay for. And the coffee tasted no better than the cheap Cuisinart I had before.
UPDATE: Annnnnnd DONE. 7 months. SEVEN! The replacement coffeemaker (with the glass carafe - $99 retail) has brewed it's last and gone off to the great Krups graveyard in hades. Along with thousands of others, I'm sure. Moving on.
It looks great on the counter, a piece of art, if that can be done for a coffeemaker. I've read some of the reviews on this site for it and couldn't agree with much of what they say. It is well designed and holds just as much coffee as any other coffee pot. In fact it holds exactly 60oz of water to brew. Filling the reservoir is easy unlike what one reviewer says. They must be blind to not see the marker in the front. Yes , I could see how it would be hard to see if you shoved this under your cabinet but really why would you. This coffee pot deserves to be centered in the kitchen. The lid opens easily with a push of the button and opens all the way manually. Not that hard to figure out. It has a spot on the left side for a charcoal filter. One review said they couldn't see the coffee thru the window, I disagree. It's a stainless steel container with the heat plate for it on the outside not the inside like the BrewStation. It has a plastic window and looks like it's built well. I have had no issues with staining so far because I scrub mine each time before I use it again. Coffee is black and is easy to see thru the window. The ledge that your cup sits on works great and is easy to change levels at will.
One review complained about the size of cups for small and large buttons. They must not have read the directions. After you turn it on and brew a pot, when you first pour a cup place the smallest coffee cup you drink out of and push the small button and hold it until it pours to the point you want it to fill up to and let the button go. From then on every time you push the small button it will pour a cup exactly that amount every time. It has a scale in it that knows by weight how much coffee you are filling up with. Then place your smallest to go thermos for your car and fill up with the large button the same way. Now you have the perfect cup for at home and on the go. As for clearance under the spout, you have 7 inches of space at the lowest setting of the ledge. And if the ledge is removed you can lean a cup against it that is up to 8 1/2 inches tall. There are 3 levels to set the ledge at.
As for those asking about gold filters, I use one in mine that is made by mr coffee and it works great and fits perfectly. I bought it at Target, oops sorry amazon, and it was the same one I used in my BrewStation. Just has to be the flat bottomed kind and not the cone. Another nice feature is the heat plate setting. You can set it to keep your coffee hot for 1, 2, 3 or 4 hours. As most pots are automatically 2 or 4 hours its nice to be able to set it to your personal choice. Another note to it is the brew head is nice and large to shower water on the grounds as opposed to the cusinart which was quite small. It brews a pot in about 7 minutes and have had no issue with temperature. The coffee is hot, not McDonald's coffee hot, but who honestly enjoys coffee that hot. It is not lukewarm as one reviewer claimed, unless of course they like scalding hot boiling liquid coffee then I could see how it would be perceived as lukewarm.
All in all a great coffee pot so far and the best one I've purchased and I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a no mess coffee maker. Well worth the money and hope to enjoy years of use.
Mr. Coffee GTF2-1 Basket-Style Gold Tone Permanent Filter
A perfect fit.
Removed the basket handle for easier fill and dump of coffee grounds. Might be excessive, but if used with a paper filter as well, the coffee soaks a little longer and has a richer flavor (using slightly smaller amount of grounds with stronger blends). Love that this machine can manipulate so many ways to make, store, and serve coffee to customize particular needs for particular people and to accomodate different blends and grinds. Still experimenting and enjoying...even if we've had a while ..can still try new things.
