4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 427 ratings

‘A potent cocktail of danger, fear, paranoia and unpredictability… a chilling and addictive read’ Avid Readers Retreat

THE PAST WILL NEVER LET YOU GO…

When a four-year-old girl and her father are found dead in the Swedish city of Karlskrona, the police quickly conclude it was a murder-suicide, a tragedy requiring no further investigation.

But Luke Bergmann, a reformed criminal still haunted by his violent past, believes they are wrong. The dead man, Viktor, was his best friend, and Luke knows he would never commit such a horrific crime.

When more bodies turn up, Luke is certain the same killer has struck again. Alone, he embarks on an investigation which reaches back through decades to his friend’s involvement with a sinister cult and dark secrets are exposed as Luke struggles to keep his own long-buried demons hidden away.

And when Luke finds himself in a killer’s sights, his search for the truth becomes the fight of his life.

Can Luke get justice for Viktor and his daughter and prove his best friend was not a murderer, or will the shadows of the past overwhelm him?

Fans of The Killing, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Jo Nesbø and Will Dean will love this dark and gripping début thriller.

NOTE: KULT is inspired by shocking and tragic real events.

This was the first time in quite a while that I could not put a book down. A very well told murder mystery, with an interesting backstory, portions of which are based on actual events. Malmström draws from his own experience, as well as other events in Scientology's history, to weave a story together that is both a nail-biter, and helps others to understand how people get sucked up into movements like this one. The book also includes a cast of characters who are both flawed, and very likeable. Luke Bergmann was one of my favorite characters in a novel in a long time, and I also really liked Jenny, Daniel and Jonna. Excellent read. I highly recommend it!

I had heard of Scientology but did not know some of the weird beliefs. This book is based somewhat on the author's experience with the sect as a young man. Nonetheless, it is a crime mystery using elements of his personal knowledge and a clever one at that. Well written, good characterizations, plot, dialogue. A few minor editing problems. A bit of child pedophilia elements unrelated to Scientology but nothing too gory spelled out. These cults are out there and young people looking for something to believe in are especially vulnerable.

I enjoy Schwedenkrimi to the point of reading some in German if they haven't been translated to English. The author's familiarity with Scientology makes Kult very realistic and offers some insight into how people become entangled in it. I recall the Scientologists in Boston in the '70s with their tin can e-meters trying to drum up business. Even in that time and place they were considered too weird by most. The story moves along well with good character development. There is a slight hint towards the end that takes some impact out of the final twist but it still is a satisfying conclusion.

I would like to see more from the author but I have a feeling this might be a one-off.

What starts as a regular murder mystery/thriller turns into a book on the dangers of the Scientology movement. The hero Luke Bergman is a stereotype - bad guy turned good, imposing physique etc. - but evolves into an interesting character as he seeks the killer(s) of his friend Viktor and Viktor's daughter. Unfortunately I guessed the perpetrator way before the ending of the novel

Good thriller, based on and describing the financial, labor, and psychological exploitation of young people by the cult of Scientology. The author was one of its victims. "While working on the book, I was acutely aware that it is primarily young people who are vulnerable to the mental virus spread by destructive groups like Scientology and their leaders. These groups are the same whether it is a crackpot cult – which Scientology is – or a violent and extreme political or religious movement. My hope is that this book and the lectures I now give to adolescents will increase young people’s awareness of and resilience to the temptations offered by those who claim to have found the truth and the solution to all problems. Such people are liars."

Did not find the story interesting or thrilling , read half the book and the last chapter only .......looking forward to next thriller / detective .

This is a spell-binding work. I read it all in two sittings, just enough of a break to get some shut-eye. I was in a cult myself and actually felt the characters anxiety. The protagonist is so well done. Immensely believable. Looking forward to reading the next book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Where is the next book?

This was an unusual, intriguing and entertaining book. Scientology aside, it was well written, dramatic and easy to follow the timeline. The Scientology just added an extra layer of interest to the story; all the information was instep with Leah Remini’s exposes: Scientology and the Aftermath. I will be watching for his next book. This author offered something unusual in his genre. I appreciate that. I tire of the “fill in the character and plot” canned format served up in many novels written these days.

Taken as an insight into the evils of cults, Scientology in this case, Kult is compulsive reading. No matter how much you read and research, it takes someone who has been a member to relay the true evil behind what is a powerful and coercive organisation.

If you have an interest in cults, you should find this illuminating; enjoyable would be the wrong word.

Kudos to the author for being brave enough to share his experiences.

I knew nothing about scientology before reading this book except for the names of high profile members. I have now read up a little on it and realise it is not a religion but a money making cult

Not the best of Nordic Noir because the thread went missing early. The two time periods just don't fit as well as they usually do.
