They will take all you can dish out.The KA-BAR Becker BK9 Combat Bowie features the same ergonomic handle design of the popular BK7 and also features an American Bowie style blade, the Becker BK9 Combat Bowie has proven to perform well during extended periods of use with less user fatigue than most other knives in its class. I removed the handles, stripped the finish and put a forced patina on the blade by boiling it in vinegar, before strategically blobbing mustard on it. Then I put on aftermarket micarta handle scales, a paracord lanyard and I bought an aftermarket, dangler sheath.
It shaves feather sticks with ease and batoning through firewood is no problem.
I've also used the back of the blade to scale a 4 lb bass, and then filleted the fish with the same knife.
It's a nice blade in the kitchen. It makes short work of melons or meat.
I like the trailing edge. It makes a nice skinning blade (for large game) and if I need to use it for self defense I'm sure it will excel there too.
Got some GKC blue/black G10 with orange liners custom scales (thanks Kevin ) for the BK5. The knife improves by factor of ten in the grip/looks department with these added. They are a little "fuller" with better palm swell, have WAY better grip, and absolutely make it look awesome. Can't wait for my wife to try her knife on our first camping trip this year @kings canyon.
I also have a 7, 9, 11, 14, and 16.
All are outstanding knives that fill different roles.
The BK-5 falls between the 7 and 9, length-wise, but handles like a much smaller blade.
The trailing point design creates a very long slicing edge that is fantastic for food prep. The finger choil, (not present on most Becker blades), allows one to choke up for much finer tasks that you might not think of performing with a knife of this size.
The unsharpened false edge does shave a bit of weight off the blade, but is not very forgiving on batons.
As with every other Becker, the nylon sheath leaves a bit to be desired, but for the price you really can't complain too much.
It is my understanding that this model has been discontinued and what is being sold right now is factory back stock. That makes sense because the both the "KaBar" and "BK 5" designations on the blade are the old-style stampings, as opposed to the newer laser engraving.
For $52 at the time of my purchase, I feel like this is perhaps the BEST VALUE for a knife I have ever purchased!
I'd buy a few more if I could afford to right now, but you really only need one.
