A NATIONAL BESTSELLER
This explosive book is the definitive account of the Biden administration's most disgraceful hour—and the chaos it unleashed in the world.
Still, the full story is worse than anyone imagined. Drawing from hundreds of hours of first-person interviews, investigative reporter Jerry Dunleavy and former Army Captain and Afghanistan veteran James Hasson provide an exclusive, no-holds-barred account of the disastrous events of August 2021. Kabul is packed with shocking and infuriating exclusive details about fatal politics and bureaucracy that contributed to the catastrophe. The authors also tell, for the first time, inspiring stories of the bravery and sacrifices exhibited by countless Americans on the ground.
Kabul's original reporting includes eyewitness accounts from servicemembers of all ranks who participated the rescue effort, inside information from senior intelligence officials, interviews with high-ranking members of allied governments, harrowing stories from Americans and Afghan allies willfully abandoned by craven officials in Washington, and exclusive details about veteran-led rescue missions that continue to this day. Chapter after chapter, Kabul depicts American government at its worst and “ordinary” Americans at their best.
Ultimately, this book explains how Biden’s Afghanistan retreat spurred a dangerous new era that persist for decades. While Americans watched the fall of Afghanistan with disbelief, our nation’s enemies were also paying close attention.

Editorial Reviews
Review
"Jerry Dunleavy and James Hasson provide a substantive account of the disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan that should enrage and educate every reader. Their examination of the events that took place on the ground during this crisis not only provide truthful accounts for those still grieving their lost loved ones at Abbey Gate but confirm this withdrawal was the worst American foreign policy debacle in modern day history."―Congressman Michael Waltz, former Army Green Beret and Afghan war veteran
"James Hasson and Jerry Dunleavy provide a brutal, no-holds-barred account that reveals the scope of the Biden administration’s disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan. Every American should read Kabul."―Ben Shapiro, Editor Emeritus of The Daily Wire and Host of The Ben Shapiro Show

The authors spin a detailed account of what happened and how the last minute, frenetic evacuation unfolded, culminating in a suicide- bomb attack that killed 13 American soldiers and many Afghans. One of the authors is a seasoned journalist and the other is a military man who served in Afghanistan. They show how chaotic the evacuation became. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken declared, ‘This is not Saigon. This is manifestly not Saigon’. In many ways it was worse. No one fell to his death from a fleeing helicopter in Saigon. The video of the Afghan dentist who fell to his death from the American plane in midair is too vivid.
The American withdrawal from Afghanistan received lots of criticism from Americans and its allies. What went wrong? Was it a policy failure or an operational one? The authors have no qualms blaming the State department, and President Biden for what they regard as a massive policy failure, and the naïve expectations that led to operational failure.
The individual stories are breathtaking, moving, and in many instances, heart-warming. It has stories of betrayal and despair. Greed and corruption mixed in good measure with amazing bravery and humanity. The reader will be moved by the story of the helicopter that took three senators, including Joe Biden on a field tour in Afghanistan on 21 February 2008. The helicopter made a forced landing in hostile territory. A quick reaction force that included an Afghan interpreter, Khalili, who volunteered to assist, went to extract the senators. The authors tell the story of how the US abandoned Khalili when Kabul fell (p.226-228).
Out of the chaos, the State department, the authors tell us, were out of touch with the exigencies on the ground. Moreover, the authors claim that the administration claimed credit for the good and brave work of the servicemen on the ground. Even after the Talibans officially took over the country after August 2021, US veterans used their pension money to organise extraction operations to save as many of their Afghan compatriots as they can.
