The Kaiju Preservation Society is John Scalzi's first standalone adventure since the conclusion of his New York Times bestselling Interdependency trilogy.

When COVID-19 sweeps through New York City, Jamie Gray is stuck as a dead-end driver for food delivery apps. That is, until Jamie makes a delivery to an old acquaintance, Tom, who works at what he calls “an animal rights organization.” Tom’s team needs a last-minute grunt to handle things on their next field visit. Jamie, eager to do anything, immediately signs on.

What Tom doesn't tell Jamie is that the animals his team cares for are not here on Earth. Not our Earth, at least. In an alternate dimension, massive dinosaur-like creatures named Kaiju roam a warm, human-free world. They're the universe's largest and most dangerous panda and they're in trouble.

It's not just the Kaiju Preservation Society who have found their way to the alternate world. Others have, too. And their carelessness could cause millions back on our Earth to die.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of March 2022: An alternate world of giant monsters where the heroes have to watch Godzilla to get in? Yes, please. In The Kaiju Preservation Society, John Scalzi returns to modern times after The Last Emperox, the capper of his far-future set— and also excellent!—Interdependency series. The novel kicks off in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic but doesn’t dwell long on the general devastation of 2020 before escaping into Kaiju Earth, where terrifying beasts and pop culture comedy are both in ready supply. Jamie Gray is the perfect reader insert, a sci-fi fan (they wrote their master’s thesis on Frankenstein and the Murderbot Diaries) who, after being fired from a food delivery company, gets swept up in the effort to protect the Kaiju. Jamie’s delight in this new world and tendency to ask the same questions readers will have— just how does a creature that large exist in real life?— make for a compelling protagonist who is easy to root for. I flew through the pages of this one like a winged Kaiju searching for a human-sized snack. —Marcus Mann, Managing Editor

Young heroes protect kaiju from monsters
4 out of 5 stars
Young heroes protect kaiju from monsters
This is a light, amusing tale that makes creative use of familiar concepts, as telegraphed in the title. The protagonist is a young grad school dropout, and most of the other characters are scientists. There is no sex -- it might be a Young Adult novel. There is lots of Scalzi's trademark wit and humor as well as a trans character.INFLUENCES1) Of course Godzilla is the obvious influence, along with the other kaiju films that followed. Scalzi takes the original link between Godzilla and atomic/nuclear weapons and gives it a twist. Which kaiju are in "The KPS"? Frustratingly, we are given only the barest descriptions, so we don't know. Some fly. Some have eyes, or just eye-spots. More detailed description would have been much appreciated.2) The kaiju live in a mysterious land which is a direct descendant of Jules Verne's "Journey to the Center of the Earth" and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Lost World," along with, of course, the more recent "Jurassic Park." This one is updated using the Many-Worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics.3) The third influence is one which I doubt that many recent science fiction fans know about. Brian Aldiss was the first, in 1958, to introduce the idea that very large beasts might have very large parasites, in "Poor Little Warrior!" (Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction). This idea has been picked up and used in several kaiju films, and plays a key role in "The KPS."The author says he had fun writing this, and I had fun reading it.

This is the first book I’ve read by John Scalzi, but it certainly won’t be my last. On a sci-fi kick after reading Armada by Ernest Cline, I picked up this best seller after being drawn in by the summary, and it did not disappoint. This book was witty, funny and filled with science that even us normal non-science people can appreciate. It was a quick read, and I couldn’t put it down. I’ll definitely be picking up some other Scalzi books this year.

This was a great summer read for this science teacher. The book was easy to get into, with just enough science jumbo jumbo to have me joyfully suspend my disbelief. Kaiju as actinide fueled mega walking ecosystems….SURE! I laughed out loud more than once. Can we get a sequel?

I loved this book (and also his "Starter Villain" book) since both of them have this great snarky sense of humor. Unfortunately, his other books are more standard Sci-Fi fare and I'm really really hoping he will write more in the style of these two books (are you reading this John???) Note to 'sensitive' folks - there is quite a bit of foul language throughout the book, but it is no big deal to me. Felt like it wasn't all that necessary but didn't detract from enjoying the story, implausible as it is. Suspend your beliefs in reality and relax into a fun, crazy story with engaging characters. The down side - finding more books like this. Oh, and i have the audible book as well as the kindle version - the audible is narrated by Will Wheaton who is the perfect snarky voice for John Scalzi books!

I really enjoyed the concept of this book. I would say the first 3/4 of it were very entertaining. The last 1/4 got into classic James Bond villain mode. You can tell who the main villain is right away. So there are no surprises there. I do love how he team conquered things in the end. One of my major complaints was the constant joking during crisis. I’ve been in that situation where gallows humor helps you survive. In this case it was excessive and repetitive. Rated C +

In his afterword, John Scalzi says of The Kaiju Preservation Society that "it is not...a brooding symphony of a novel. It's a pop song. It's meant to be light and catchy, with three minutes of hooks and choruses for you to sing along with, and then you're done and you go on with your day, hopefully with a smile on your face." That's a pretty accurate description of KPS, which is an enormously entertaining, if slight, book about a government agency that oversees, studies, and yes, preserves a planet full of kaiju - massive monsters a la Godzilla, Mothra, and the like. (Kaiju is the Japanese name for the giant monster genre.) Told in Scalzi's usual jokey, quippy style, KPS moves rapidly, delivers some amazing wonder, gives enough plot to get the job done, and moves on - much like the pop song he concedes the book to be. That's both to its credit - the book is hugely fun, harbors no illusions about what it is, and delivers the entertainment is wants to do - and its detriment, as the villain is a bit heavy-handed, the plot a little obvious and unsurprising, and the world ultimately less explored than I wish it was. But as Scalzi says, "we all need a pop song from time to time," and he's not wrong - KPS was exactly what I needed after a few heavier books and some general stress in life. I maybe wish there was a little more heft to it, but as a fun bit of imaginative storytelling, it hit the spot nicely.

Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2023
This book succeeds at being exactly what the author set out for it to be: a light, fluffy novel to enjoy after a particularly stressful time in our recent history. It works gloriously -- I had a blast reading this. That said, I'll agree with some of the observations of other reviewers that Jamie's (he's the viewpoint character) friends are not particularly developed. But I think that is fine, because the whole purpose of a book like this is just to take the reader on a fun ride without getting overly bogged down in things like character development. This book is the written equivalent of a fun adventure movie (and, in fact, I think it would adapt well to the screen), as opposed to the sort of deeply introspective things that win awards.

So, a little background. This novel starts at the beginning of the Covid pandemic in 2020 and is set during the pandemic and the 2020 presidential election. In fact, it ends right after the election. And while those things don't dominate this book, they are an important aspect to the context of the novel -- because part of the fun of this book is the idea of being able to just disappear into another world for a few months and not have to deal with those things. But without the pandemic, Jamie likely never would have even been in a position where he'd have been offered a job with the Kaiju Preservation Society.

Aside from that, the premise is that the Kaiju (Japanese movie monsters) are real and that they exist on a parallel Earth. The Kaiju Preservation Society sends people to this alternate Earth where they both study and care for these creatures. And therein lies some of the appeal of the book and why the pandemic and presidential election matter to the success of this book. After all, what science fiction reader doesn't find the idea of having spent 2020 in an alternate world more than a bit appealing? I don't want to do any spoilers, so I'll just note that while the first half of the book is primarily setting things up, there is some genuine action and adventure in the second half.

The only other thing I'll note is that if you're one of those people who think that "woke" is awful and Trump is a great president, I suggest that you skip this book. You won't like it -- it contains a non-binary character and the author's political leanings will annoy you -- and you'll come back and unfairly malign this book. But for anyone else who enjoys science fiction and/or movie monsters, it's well worth reading.

This book is a hoot. It has a proper story with some nice jeopardy and all that good stuff, but it's fun. A song of praise to nerds, nerd culture and people loving what they work at, it's a refreshing read. But, as I say, proper story and stuff. If you like sci-fi, old monster films, and being in the company of engaging characters, do yourself a favour and read this book.
